Anybody else see these beasts recently caught off the coast of La.? We will be heading to G.I. next weekend for the start of Snapper season and was wondering how many of you have actually caught a Cubera before. I have caught large Mangrove Snapper before that looked a lot like a Cubera, but really not sure how to tell for sure.

Teeth are a good indicator but generally not definitive.

Best way to tell is look at the tooth patch on the roof of the mouth. Cubera have a triangle shaped patch, mangroves have an arrow shaped patch.

Another similarly colored snapper is the dog or dogtooth snapper. It has a tooth patch similar to the cubera (triangle shaped) but has blue splotches or a blue line under the eye. It is also commonly confused for a mangrove as they top out around the same size.

I’m going to panama in December hoping to land a stud cubera. They get up over 50 lbs. From what I heard they throw tuna poppers in 40-80 feet of water over reefs over and over until a cubera comes up and crushes the topwater. Said the explosion is much bigger than when jacks hit topwater.

Don't know how true it is, but some people that spear fish the shallow rigs told me they are much more popular around the shallow water rigs than people realize because no one targets them with the right gear. Which makes sense, anyone fishing the 50-80ft rigs are fishing with snapper setups and not Warsaw setups.

Hypothesizing here, but if I were to burn an afternoon or two trying to target them. Probably drop down some 5lb live snapper, large blue runner, etc around the coastal rigs 30-80ft and fish the same way you would large AJs/Warsaws, using the boat and rod holder to pull them out of the rig.

They are definitely not "common" but we do see them. They're very timid fish.

Many people that hook them break it off in the rig before ever knowing

A guy I know speared one scuba diving at the Flower Garden Banks. I saw pics and I think it was about 50-60 pounds.

Super jealous. That will be a fun trip. Be sure to take a lot of pictures and report back here on how you liked it. Me and Mrs. Crawfish have talked about going.

I’m 35 and have fished out of GI all my life. Between my 2 brothers, dad and me we’ve probably caught 2.5 dozen over the years. Most of them from spear fishing when we were pretty heavy into it 15 years ago

We caught two one night on the rock just south of the old platform at 412 vermillion. Both about 80lbs.

I had a bluefish bite me so hard trying to get a jighead out one time. Didn’t think I was remotely close to my finger in his mouth but that bastard bit down and would not let go. It was so bad it looked like a tuna had been caught but it was my blood all over the deck. I had a bluefish tooth under my fingernail for about 6 months too. Never again!
