Crabbing tomorrow

I want to take the kids out to try to catch a few crabs tomorrow. What do yall recommend as bait for crab nets, turkey necks, beef melt, fish heads or something else?
You used to be able to catch crabs in the marsh off Paris road heading down to Chalmette but since the build the surge wall I don't know if its still a good area. Or should we just go on down to Delacroix or somewhere else in that area? Thanks in advance for the help.

Can’t go wrong with turkey necks

Used to go in back of bonnet Carre spillway in the wetland park. Haven’t been there since last year

Middle of summer? You can catch them on just about anything. Seriously! I was out crabbing one day and a guy kicked the bucket of chicken necks we had off the weir after we had set only 2 out. Noticed some old string lines that had been left and a couple were tight. Pulled the 1st one in and it had big old blues and all that was on the line was a big birdnest knot at the end. after pulling in 4 or 5 crabs on that line, we made a few more of our own. Ended up with about 7 dozen that day, with only 2 chicken necks in the water.
That said.....Heading out on the 4th of July to go crabbing. I would also suggest bringing a large pry bar because you'll need it to get between the rest of the people.

I used legs on string lines in spillway

Chicken leg quarters hold well on a rope and catch crabs as well as anything. They are easier to tie. If those are too expensive, some beef melt.

Turkey necks for handlining due to physics but if using traps of any kind use fresh fish, get the cheapest trash fish from the closest fish market.

Yep, and usually can get them super cheap.
I would not go to Delacroix for crabs. They are kites. If you can somehow get those nets in Lake Pontchartrain, do that.

Zoom soft plastic bait. It was a joke. But the crabs made me go thru 2 packs

What does this mean?

Kites are skinny crabs. You need turkey necks because they hold up better than chicken necks. Like others said any old fish will do well but doesn’t last long. I like to keep old trout bellies.

Talked to my scouts they are catching a few by wetland watchers park. Try the dock that goes into the woods it comes out on a canal. They are medium in the canal but have meat. The lake has nicer crabs

If you want to head down to Grand Isle, we did good in the surf. I use a 4' PVC pipe stuck in the sand as an anchor and turkey neck.

Thanks for all of the help.

Kites are empty crabs. Not much meat or fat. All shell.
