for an outdoorsman and family? Considering both places for a move and will be heading out there this summer. I've been to CS but not SLC. Spent some time in Southern Utah.

Ogden and Provo also possible options.

Spent a few days in SLC/Ogden area last spring. Seemed like a nice area. If you are from Louisiana Utah has some weird AF liqour laws.

If you aren't LDS you are an outsider. A lot of non-LDS people have moved to SLC proper but if you are moving to the suburbs of SLC or elsewhere in the state, you are moving into a very cliquish environment.

This does have me a little concerned even if Utah may offer more natural beauty. From what I've heard CS has been growing pretty rapidly lately. It seems the people wouldn't be as rigid in CS though.

SLC. The front range has become urban hipster heaven.

What I've gathered on several trips over the years. Things may have changed; however I'd spend a little time meeting/greeting before buying the proverbial farm in Utah.

Great place to visit if your into the outdoors.

I've lived in the suburbs of the Salt Lake Valley for going on 20 years now. I have world class skiing, trout fishing and mountain biking within 1 hour from my front door. Withing 2 or 3 hours, the outdoor recreations options are limitless. That being said, there are 1,000,000+ people here that can say the same thing.

The Mormons are fine. We like our LDS neighbors and the like us. The older LDS couple that lives beside us are the best neighbors we've ever had. LDS as a whole are very family oriented and respect the same values in others. In our neighborhood, and I can only speak for mine, the LDS kids and non LDS kids play together everyday. That not true everywhere. Alienation is more likely to happen in Utah Country (Provo/Lehi) than Salt Lake County. Western Salt lake country is worse in that regard than the east side. However, housing prices are lower on the west side.

At least before COVID, the economy here is/was very good. The tech sector is booming. Housing prices are high, but cost of living otherwise is better than many big cities. FWIW, if you come here, you are moving to earthquake country. Avoid older masonry homes if you can.

FWIW, Ogden is up and coming, but they struggle with a significant homeless population (after SLC ran them out of town a few years ago) and the associated drug problem.

When I first moved here (I was young) it was an adjustment for sure. In many ways, it was very similar to the south. The state has it's quirks, but what state doesn't?

I know I'm likely to get blasted for this, but I'm going to say it anyway. For ME, the major negative for Colorado are the pot laws. I'm not sure I'd want to raise my kid(s) in that environment. It may not make a difference, but I wouldn't want to chance it.

Good luck with your decision.

Edited to add: I read that as any fishing year round. So take this reply with a grain of salt.

Yes. The both the middle and the lower Provo River are tailrace fisheries. They fish very well in the winter. It's easier if your a fly fisherman and there is a midge hatch almost every sunny day in the winter.

Here are my buddies Cheech, Lance and Curtis fishing the middle Provo in February. (FWIW, Lance was on Team USA fly fishing for a long time. He's the most productive fly fisherman I've ever known.)

Fly Fish Food Feb Fishing (youtube)

There is also ice fishing if you are a masochist. lol.

Have fun. Any specific activities you'd want to do with your family? I'll try to keep an eye on this thread. I don't pop in as often as I used to my if you have any specific questions, fire away.

FWIW, if you want to get a pulse on this part of the world, start looking at KSL.com. It's the local NBC station, but their comment section for each news story is where you can get an idea of the overall sentiment of the population here.

They also have a great classified section. You can find just about anything you want in there.

Utah....SLC has pretty mild winters and is a hunting dream....and fishing is great in Utah.

Colorado is good but the regulations are more akin to Washington and California...Utah is closer to those in New Mexico.

SLC is a STRANGE place though....seriously....you will be treated as if you do not exist by a sizeable population...if you ain't a Mormon then Mormons will go out of there way to ignore your presence....they will not even feign friendliness or neighborly tendencies...they will not sell you property unless it has already been sullied. They won't go out of their way to be rude they will just act as if you do not exist at all...Idaho is also plagued with this.

They will, for instance, serve you in a restaurant and the service will be acceptable....but if you strike up a conversation they will simply ignore it....the first few times it happens it is disturbing...then, at least to me, it is fun to watch them react this way so I go out of my way to engage in conversation with them...it is hilarious to see because their human instinct is to respond but their training prevents it....and the conflict is very funny, to me.
