lump charcoal review
I stumbled across this you tube video comparing 6 common charcoals. the guy did a good job comparing them and I thought it was well done. I still find Royal oak the most common found and reasonably priced but now wanna try B&B if I can find it for the right price. I tried cowboy but found it mostly dust and pea gravel so not as much charcoal for the money. Anyways a good video for you lump charcoal guys

Cowboy is trash. I've used it.
I normally use BGE brand or Royal Oak. BGE brand is supposed to be the same as Royal Oak. It's more expensive, but my local dealer does a punch card thing where you get a free 20lb bag every 5 purchases.
My local grocery has Royal Oak, so if I'm out of BGE and it's a weekend (dealer closed), I just get that.

So you like Royal Oak over the Cowboy stuff?

Can you get a reliable snake from lump?

I do. When I lived in BR, the closest place to my house that sold lump only sold Cowboy. I used to buy it any time I was in a pinch for charcoal. My experience mirrors Capt. Ray's. Mostly powder and tiny bits of charcoal, and it ashes like hell.

no doubt about it the cowboy stuff is cheap trashy and ya actually dont get to use the whole bag cause its got very small stuff in it. I think royal oak is best bang for ya buck If you are wealthy enough to waste money on an egg than you prolly will be willing to waste money on egg charcoal too. I will not waste money on cowboy even though its cheap. I will look for B& b and if it aint too expensive I'll try it. I prefer buying American and refuse to buy Russian

I've always used Royal Oak, myself.

What are the biggest advantages of lump over briquette?

You are still overpaying with the punch card. BGE lump is 100% Royal Oak. You can get a 30lb bag of RO at Walmart for 16.96.

put some good firewood in a sealed metal barrel and then build a fire around it. Make your own for cheap. May have to poke a few holes for venting but can’t remember. Been a while since I’ve done it

I agree with you. That Cowboy stuff is to ashy especially if you try to use it for smoking meats

BGE brand is the best (at least if you are using a BGE). The reason is because the chunks are much bigger allowing more airflow through the charcoal; there by allowing quicker start and better control.
Royal Oak is a good budget item (ie Walmart), but the chunks are much smaller on average, leading to more ash to clean up (more cleaning).
Just my two cents. I also try to get BGE if I can, but use Royal Oak as a last minute option if needed.

I do find the BGE chunks to be much bigger than the chunks in the average Royal Oak bag. So while they may be the same manufacturer, there is definitely a size discrepancy there.

Other than searing a steak why do you need a hotter burn than briquettes

quote:hotter burn = more energy. more energy, you can smoke for longer on the same amount. Most Briquettes ave additives that could be transferred to the meat. Thats the reason the Kamado companies say to not use them. it will leach into the porous ceramic.

by the way i do use kingsford professional sometimes with smoking.

Of course, but I meant as compared to other lump brands. Cowboy ashes much worse than Royal Oak or BGE. I have to clean out my BGE's ash basin maybe once every 4-5 cooks with BGE/Royal Oak. With Cowboy, I had to clean it every cook, and I couldn't reuse charcoal as well because of how much the airflow was clogged because of the ash.
