In Texas they just started stocking more trout and less redfish. The freeze kind of forced their hand but that is what happened, the bottle neck in the hatcheries are usually in the grow out ponds so it's just a matter of what fry they choose to go with.

This is an interesting topic. I listen to Capt Mickey Eastmans radio show a good bit out of Houston. They have stocked reds in the Galveston bay area for awhile and says they have a bull red problem and a lack of slot reds. Bull reds eating small trout off their lines, etc. The theory is they were hatchery raised and don't know to migrate to the gulf when they reach maturity.

Don't know if I necessarily believe that theory b/c I've noticed the same thing in Big Lake where you're way more likely to catch a bullred than slot red, and they havent stocked any as of yet. But I do find it interesting and could be some truth to it.

When trout fishing, 90% of the reds I catch in the gulf are bulls. They are a major pain to deal with and reds along with sharks and porpoises always seem to come through and scatter the school. Although I hear about the lack of reds, there definitely is no shortage of the bulls in the gulf.

Between poggie boats not just indiscriminately killing all of its bycatch , but im of the opinion the night time bow fishing should be heavily regulatedif not eliminated.
One could argue shooting undersized, or lights at night effectively stunning the reds.....
But as a longtime outdoorman, a very smart old fisherman pointed out just how much fishing pressure is on our reds. Us daytime fishermen pound them all day, and as the sun sets for us, the reds are being chased all night under boatable floodlight.
Any, all wildlife is affected hunting pressure, and will move to other areas less affected.

It’s unreal what they’ve done to the marsh and redfish population in there.
