Teague, my cousin has been licensed since 1985 and currently has a red shouldered and a red tailed. I studied and followed him for a while and ended up trapping a Kestrel and took it to college with me my freshman year. I realized quickly that the falcon demanded much more attention than I had to give, so I gave it to my cousin. He basically "rescued" it from me and released it. I'd like to get back into it, but 2 kids under 3 years old make it nearly impossible.

My wife's dog is really small. She gets worried that one of the owls in our oak trees are gonna scoop him up one night when he goes out.

Some famous celebrities lap dog was scooped up by an eagle or hawk last year. I remember telling my wife about it.

It does happen. I remember a hawk eying my mom's chihuahua when he was a puppy. Some people use dogs to hunt with their birds. But there has to be an acclimation period.

She's actually female. I fly her at about 1120g but I'm planning to drop her slightly to see if that helps with some of our misses.

So how's that work? does the bird get to eat the rabbit or do you get it?

Yeah, he might want to clarify that statement.
Teague, the offers open....especiially if you want to try over water (but no guarantee bald eagles aren't around). I 'have use' of the Klibanoff place (on MS mtn.) also.

We'll stay in touch on here. Once I feel like she's hunting well enough, I won't be so hesitant to take others with me. Then I'll be glad to kill your rabbits.

Congrats Teague!

My buddy has been a falconer for 25 years.
I have been going with him for about 7 years. I have caught many rabbits with his hawk. It certainly takes bunny hunting to a whole new level!

The only reason I don't have a hawk myself is that I love to deer hunt and I wouldn't give the fair amount of time that the hawk deserves.

Congrats on the rabbit kill. Keep it up!!

It's definitely time consuming. I haven't deer hunted much for the past 10 years. I just started getting back into it last year, but since I got the hawk this year, I haven't been once. I've planned on going several times but each time, the night before I've started thinking how I'd rather just take the bird out. So, I end up skipping the deer hunting and flying my hawk instead.

I've spent thousands of hours sitting in a tree with a bow in my hand, and I love it, but it just doesn't compare to falconry for me.

If I really wanted to, I could squeeze in a deer hunt in the morning and some hawking in the afternoon, or vice versa, but I don't like to be rushed.

Teague, that is a cool hobby. Keep us informed, as this is pretty interesting reading. Also, how cool is it to say this:

They don't bring it back. They CAN kill the rabbit, but usually when you get there, it's still alive and you help "dispatch" it. You try to get there as soon as possible because sometimes the rabbit/squirrel might manage to get away. Also, with squirrels, they can inflict some nasty bites. Hawks sometimes get severed tendons and even lose whole toes from squirrel bites.

oh! i figured it picked up the animal and brought it back to where you are. so you just have to watch it, see where it goes and run over there and get the animal?
