Try to find a point where the current breaks.
Not an easy thing to do where I fish along the river. It is mostly straight banks and the current is running like crazy until late summer when it gets real low and slows a bit.
Here's a true story about how that river current is crazy dangerous. When I was a teen, me and a couple of cousins were fishing off the banks in Arabi and we saw this huge tree drifting downstream. It got caught in a big eddy and that damn tree started spinning and eventually stood up on end and got sucked underwater. That was totally unreal to see.
You'd NEVER see me swimming in the river with those currents.

I run hoop nets in the Mississippi here in SE AR and only keep flatheads for me and my family members. To me there isn’t a better tasting fish in the world.

Run trot lines in the flooded trees behind the levee while the water is up. Bring a wheel barrow to haul them back over!!!!

We have a saying, "The answer to pollution is dilution." Total pollution load is much higher than the impaired streams listed; however, due to the large flow the rate of pollution does not meet requirements for impairment. It is impaired up north at the headwaters due to the fact that the flow is much lower, and the rate of pollution meets that impairment criteria.
All that to say what others have said, eating catfish out of the Amite or Bayou Manchac would be worse than eating those that come from the Mississippi.

There's a few guys I've seen using kayaks or canoes to negotiate the areas of the batture that are loaded with trees to run trot lines or noodle lines.
With either one, you can park on the street side of the levee and carry or drag the boat up the levee without much difficulty.
