the recent cast net thread got me thinking. there are many diffferent ways to toss the net. Usually i am in ankle deep surf to mid-thigh.

my problem has been actually getting mullet in the net on the beach.

i was at hilton head three weeks ago and saw large mullet and finger mullet in the surf.

I would see a school of about 15 large mullet and would toss. I would only come up with about 1 or 2, if any.

In the schools of 100+ finger mullet, i would get 4 or 5.

I assume my problems are:
1. i am spooking them during the wind up.
2. or it could be that I am casting too close and need to let them get away a bit.
3. I am getting the net too high and they see it incoming
4. my expectations are too high after seeing other netters get so many you can hear them in the net on the beach.

ETA.

Here is the professional that taught me via YouTube.

Is your net opening up on the throw? Is it a small net? Is it sinking too slowly?

Is every part of the circle landing near the same time?

I use a 6' net in the surf and I go up to chest deep in the water. I learned how to throw the net without having to put any part in my teeth or throw anything over my shoulder, the entire operation is done with only your hands.

6' net in the surf

This is your issue. A 6ft net is almost impossible to catch large mullet with. A pro will use a 10-14 ft net.

2ndly, water depth for smaller nets is important. With that small of a net you need to be under 1ft of depth.

Lastly, lead them. Fish don't have a reverse mode. If something hits the water they go faster or change directions. If you lead them you can often scare them into the net, if that makes sense.

But again, a 6ft net is always going to be hard with mature mullet.

Bigger net will help a ton, for sure.
