I have a friend who owns a restaurant in Honduras. A vendor sold him fish once that turned out to be barracuda that was infected with ciguatera. Be careful with barracuda. Link to a story about another incident.LINK /

I think it is actually any reef fish not just barracuda seems to be more concentrated in larger fish.
On a side note Ciguatera which you are talking about is produced by dinoflagellates which are marine plankton which give off a glow. They will actually make the surf glow at night. A guy I went to high school with figured out a way to grow the dinoflagellates and make them stable to be able to sell to people in a glass globe. When you shake the globe they will emit light. Biopop was the name of his company which he has since sold.

Yeah every time I’ve been fishing in the carribean the rule was to only eat Pelagics. Always was worried about eating reef fish especially the larger ones - amberjack were always understood to be a no go. Cool pics looks like an awesome trip.

Sounds like an incredible trip. How did you find the house and who did you rent the boat from?

Found the house on VRBO. The boat came from Dwight Brice ( 1-242-524-8008). He brought the boat to our house the day we arrived and picked it up the day we left. Boat ran perfect. He has several boats to choose from.

How was the house? I’ve been reading reviews and there are so many to choose from that seem nice. I’d like to take my wife and kids down there to do some fishing/snorkeling/spearfishing. Was this the first time you’ve been? Any recommendations you have are greatly appreciated.

This was our third time down and the first two times we stayed at House called Calypso Hill It has the benefit of including a small Boston Whaler about 15’ but you can pay extra for a 17’ which I would recommend. The small whaler will beat you to death if there is any chop on the water. That house has a really nice protected dock area. Seemed like the maintenance had not been keep up the second year but it was okay. Google Calypso hill and there are some videos of the house.
This year we stayed at a place called Landfall Exuma and it was great. The view from the master bedroom and upstairs deck are incredible. The pictures on the web of the house do not do it justice. Had everything you need in the kitchen. Came with two paddle boards and two kayaks. (As does Calypso Hill).
Both of these house are in a town called Hartswell which is on Moriah Harbour. You could spend your whole trip in Moriah Harbour exploring and not be disappointed. It is also close to Little Exuma bridge which is a great bonefish area.
All of the local little roadside places to eat were great. A place called Prime Island Meats and Deli is a great place to buy fresh sandwich meats, steaks, and chicken. Guy named Ron Kemp runs. He is a great guy to have a beer with and talk about the island politics. He is a Trump guy.
This island is a great place to carry kids and let them explore. But if you are going for the night life or fine dining you will be disappointed. A car and boat is a must for exploring the island.

Thanks so much for the info. If you don’t mind, I might contact you again later as we start to make plans.

Is that second pic a Nassau Grouper? Are you allowed to keep those?

They have to weigh over 3lbs to keep in the Bahamas.
