Have any of yall taken the captains license exam or one of the classes that teach the material and then let you take the exam at the end.
If so, Is there a facility you would recommend?

I did it online via Mariner's Learning System. If you're gonna do it yourself and not attend the actual school, you have to dedicate yourself. It isn't the easiest thing you'll ever do. I've heard by attending the school you get better assistance along the way.

I went to Houston marine facility in bayou labatre for my “six pac”. They teach you how to take the test I definitely think I could have passed it with a simple online prep course. That being said a few of the guys in the class had problems with the simple math needed for calculating how to navigate cap cod sound with instruments available during Columbus’s sailing days and I’m pretty sure that they passed with the tutoring of the instructor’s.
If your not going to take a class make sure you brush up on your dead reckoning skills and what nav lights a nuclear sub displays while traveling or while hindered in her ability to maneuver!!!

Remember it’s a Chart not a Map!!!
I use “set & drift” all the time when drifting reefs in the lake.
Rules of the road is probably the most important section imo.

Lol I took it in 03 or 04 and one of the funniest things was when the instructor pulled out a rule and compass and a ol coon arse who was probably born on skiff replied “ wtf I’m gonna do with that me? We ain’t got no maps like Columbus”
He was probably the most seasoned capt in the room and he struggled the most.

I went to Sea School in Ft Lauderdale
One week class, test at end . Best way cause they give the test and teach what you need
They also brought in a quack Doctor that signed all of our medical docs ! ??

I did a 6 pax about 15 years ago. two observation
For your physical DO NOT indicate you take any opioids or serious pain relievers . The bureaucracy will add 5 months and three more doctor visits prior to approval in Washington of your license
Coast Guard had me sign up to be called to active duty for 5 years if there was a national emergency as a condition of issuing the license . At age 60, I was not to worried

+1 for Mariners Learning System
Did on my own, scheduled test at the dive shop in Lafayette and that was it. Paperwork is half the hassle, and documenting sea time, especially if on boats not owned by you.
Study the Rules of the Road most, its what most struggle with on the exam and its got the least wiggle room to pass.
