If I buy a tractor with a trailer out of state do I pay La. state tax on the tractor or just the trailer? One dealer in Miss. told me all I would have to pay is 1.5% on the tractor.

Assuming it's never been registered, you will have to pay the taxes on it and the trailer in Louisiana if it's the same as buying a boat. But I'm not really sure, can someone confirm that?

The 1.5% tax is if it’s used for farming/ag work. It used to be that you’d list what you were farming.
Here is the state document. [link=(State of Ms tax exempt farm)]https://www.dor.ms.gov/Forms/sales_FarmersAffidavit.pdf[/link]

I live and will be using the tractor in Louisiana so will I have to pay Louisiana sales tax on the tractor?

If you want the title you'll have to pay the taxes at the dmv when you register it. I bought a little 50cc Honda dirt bike at Brookhaven Honda and never paid the taxes. I didn't care about the title. That was many years ago. Had it been a 4 wheeler I would've paid and got the title but not worth my trouble for a cheap little dirt bike that'll never leave my yard.

I don't think tractors have titles or need to be registered.

I’d think more than likely you will pay sales tax on the tractor unless you meet the requirements of the affidavit. You’ll probably pay taxes on the trailer when you register it.
You are correct that tractors don’t have titles.

You have to pay sales tax on an item according to the tax of the municipality where the transfer takes place, unless it is has a title (car etc) then you pay sales tax in the municipality in which it is titled. Tractors are not titled but trailers are, so you will pay sales tax where you buy the tractor (Mississippi, which is 7% unless it is for AG use then it is 1.5%, and they are checking now) then you will pay Louisiana sales tax and whichever parish sales tax you title it in

Ok now I'm really confused. I understand I will need to pay tax on the trailer. If I buy this tractor in Arkansas there is no sales tax. So if the tractor isn't titled or registered I still pay sale tax in Louisiana...on the trailer?
I'm really not trying avoid paying Louisiana sales tax ( although if I can legally avoid it that's a plus) I'm trying to figure how much I've got to spend on the equipment itself.

You will pay sales tax on the trailer in the state county/parish in which you title it, you should pay sales tax on the tractor wherever you take possession of the tractor (if they deliver it to you in la you pay la, if you take possession of It on their lot in ms or AR you pay that state)
