Been awhile since the 308 vs 30-06 debate came up here. Actually, not much to differentiate between the two:
Pros for 30-06:
Handles bullet wts >150 gr better.
A larger # of factory loads available.
Up to 100 fps more velocity w/ 150 gr factory loads.
Better ammo availability????
Pros for 308 Win:
Using same wt bullet at same velocity as 30-06, the 308 will use less powder, which leads to #2.
At same bullet wt and rifle wt, the 308 Will have slightly less calculated recoil.
Shorter and lighter action.
Some will argue that the 308 is more accurate.
They're both FINE guns and fully capable of taking ANY LA deer at ANY angle at 125 yds.

Dude, do you realize how many japs and krauts a .30-06 has stacked like cord wood?

If you are considering people, you should throw the 8mm in also

26 Nosler is a badass round, but it's a terrible suggestion for what OP needs. That's a round for dropping 300-500 yard shots in a 4" circle. OP is taking 125 yard shots max. Why would he get a gun with a short barrel life that shoots ammunition running $3-3.50 a shot?
It's a very intriguing round that doesn't lose much energy downrange, but at a max of 125 yards it is completely unnecessary. That round is better suited for hunting out west

If you don't mind one of the older model A-Bolts, here is a link to a composite in 30.06 for 500 after rebate. Even comes with bases, rings, scope, and sling. I doubt the accessories are worth anything but you can always throw them on a cheap plinking rifle.

go with the 30-06. Its a very dependable caliber. You will have no problem with it.

I have an xbolt in .280 and love it,
I have a savage American classic in 7mm-08 and love it
Xbolt is prettier and lighter
Savage accu trigger is better
I long for a drop in replacement trigger for the xbolt
