Building a 13’ x 13’ pergola with my FIL to cover my back patio
Anyone have experience building with “green” cypress?
Got a couple quotes and the cheapest place said they only have green cypress (cypress depot in port barre). Using mostly 2” x 6”s. Will I be ok with this wood long term? Want something that will look nice and last

I’m not an expert on cypress, but I would have thought green would warp as it dried.
There will be others along that know better than I.

Yes. I wouldn't if you want to keep it straight and uncracked.
You really should dry it at least for a little bit.
I built a small drying rack in my attic and dried some cypress for 6 months before building a table and it worked out great.

You don't want to build any structure out of green wood. Even pressure treated lumber will warp some if not allowed to acclimate for a few weeks.

Bad idea, it will likely crack as it dries.

What was the difference in price from green to kiln dried?

Didn’t seem to be available from what I could tell. Other places that might have it were $4-500 more

Call Jones and Jones in Lettsworth just north of Morganza. Really nice, honest cypress guys. Father and son business. Way nicer in my experience than cypress depot. Sorry I don't have number but I'm sure if u google it. Son's name is Chad.

Don't build anything with green wood. You should be able to find some one that can kiln dry it for you for very cheap if you cant find a source for seasoned cypress.
