Took a nap then woke up a couple hours later and his gun was rusted to hell.

Let it dry before good before putting it in a case for an extended period of time and then wipe it down with a rag and some oil. It’s not rocket science.

I guided sea ducks on the west coast for a few years and we were in some real nasty shite for salt water. Obviously, put it in the case for the boat ride, when you get back to where you’re going, take it out, let it dry real good, and then wipe it down. Wood stock, blued finish beretta, zero rust on it. 100+ day season on the west coast and hunted probably 85-90 of those days.

Yeah, that’s really not the case with so many Remingtons made from the late 1990s up until the last couple of years. When my son was little we borrowed my nephew’s Remington express 20. Used it dove hunting and not a speck of rain. Got home cleaning and oiled it and put it in the safe along with plenty of other guns. A few months later was getting another gun and notice the Remington was orange.

I was horrified and called my brother to tell him about it and asked him what he wanted me to do.
He said you couldn’t keep rust off that gun and to not worry about it.

It got the name rustington for a reason. You could store that gun in a vat of cosmoline and it would rust.

Do you think maybe there are different levels of bluing/machining? I have my dad’s 12ga Ithaca that I’ve hesitated to bring to the marsh just because of that. I’d love to hunt with it.

I think it's different bluing. His gun had no bluing left. It was a very old shotgun. There was no varnish left on the wood but it was a great looking shotgun. And he was deadly with it.

I have a Browning Gold shotgun that doesn't rust. I had a Browning Abolt 1 that would rust with just the slightest moisture. Certain barrels like Savage rust for nothing. Its the bluing / steel combination. Some are better than others.
