What kind of blood trail did it leave?

How far did it run?

Not much of a blood trail. Ironically, the deer only ran about 40 yards, layed down in a tree top and died right there.

I have never lost a deer using fixed blades.

I am sure 99.9 percent of the time they operate as advertised, but i dont want to be the the unlucky guy that gets screwed on the buck of a lifetime, being the .1%

Go with what works and only has operator error to blame.

Anyhow he claims he hit the shoulder blade and he could tell the arrow didnt get much pentetration.
If that's where he hit, I'm not sure anything would have helped.

When taking a shot on a deer with a bow, do you aim the same spot as a rifle or a little further back to avoid the shoulder blade?

Look at the leg bones. A good bet is to follow them up. There really isn't anything above them unless the deer is doing something strange. I've made some bad hits and have still never hit the shoulder blade. It's not really in play most of the time. Quartering away, the back side leg tells you where to aim.

Bow hunting is a game of inches and angles. There are high percentage kill shoots and low percentage. Learning the shots that give you the best chance is a must. Also never shot anything head on....I learned the hard way that arrows dont have the same effect as a rifle.

A quartering on shot from close range and high in the tree gives you a pretty good chance of smoking the shoulder blade. Your ideal shot is broadside or quartering away. I usually aim at the other side of the deer (where I want the arrow to come out) rather than a spot on the close side. You need to think of the path your arrow will take through the deer according to the angle to make the best shot, and then you have to put the arrow in that spot. It's very much a challenge because you can't just blast them away like you can with a rifle.

This was his shot.
Your chances are better with a fixed blade broadhead on this type of shot. I bet it would have blown through that shoulder had he been using a different head.

But i agree, he took a poor angled shot and paid the price.

Against all you read, I've made that shot a few times. Killed every one of them too. Rocket Steelhead 100. Complete pass through every time.

For whatever reason, my high misses are always back of the blade. I hope I continue to miss that bone.

You know, sometimes crazy stuff happens.
Things that 99-100 times would work in our favor.
Sometimes mother nature is a b itch.

All i know is that i have only lost one deer with my bow, and it was the first one i ever shot at.

Hit her really high just under the spine.
I call it "no mans land"..
They just dont bleed when you hit them really high and your exit wound is high.

It haunted me for 2 years....

Aim small miss small.

Monster. Small droplets of lung blood on palmettos. Old hands at club saying, "We will find this deer. You got back side lung." Nothing. No vultures during the week either.

My dad did that last season with his rifle. Monstrous buck snuck up on him, when he got the gun in him an acorn hit the tin roof on the box stand and he bolted. When he slowed down my dad took a pot shot at him, must have grazed the brisket or something. Really really thin blood trail for about 300 yds then nothing. Ran the blood dog that night and all morning, never found him. No buzzards came. He was so pissed
