Jacket/core separation can enhance performance with correct penetration
AND w/ correct "separation." The Partition notwithstanding, the problem w/ most jacket/core separations is inconsistency re: where the separation occurs in the animal (superficial vs deep) and the how much of the jacket remains. (the copper jacket itself is not very deep and doesn't penetrate much if separated from the lead core). The NPT is basically designed for the front 1/3 of the bullet to consistently "separate" from the rear part of the bullet, back to the horizontal copper partition; because of this, everything from the partition backwards remains intact to assure deep penetration.

Want to hunt hogs at night with option to hunt deer. Thinking about thermal scope too.
Don't know shite about either. Maybe i should start a thread to avoid jacking this one.

And that’s why I like the partition so much.
If I had to choose, I’d pick penetration over expansion and just chunk bigger bullets.
Great thing about .308 is there’s a ton of stuff out there that works.

There’s so much value in that little experiment you did with your boy about bullet performance. I’ve put my dog a bunch of 7mag tracks that never amounted to anything. Get a lightly constructed 140gr bullet scooting at 3200+FPS and stick in the on side shoulder knuckle at 100 yards and you might not have shite. Take that same shot with a .30-30 cheapo depot bullet putt putting along at about 1800 at that range and you have DRT deer.
High performance calibers demand high performance bullets to give reliable results. The .308 isn’t a smoking thermonuclear magnum, and does really good on deer with pretty much everything you feed it. It’s in that sweet spot of 2500-2800 FPS at the muzzle where cup and core bullets can usually hold together and premium stuff will open up some. Start shooting deer really close or really far and it can start to matter but for the average dude, anything you grab will reliably expand a bit, exit, and make groceries.

Federal Premium ballistic tips 150 Grain drops them in there tracks. I shot all types of rounds but in my gun these seem to have a better group then anything I shot out of it.

Went back to corelokts about 3 years ago after trying several others. Federal, Winchester, etc.
Every deer I've shot with the corelokts has dropped right where it stood. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Federal and Hornaday at this caliber, particularly for hunting.
HSM and Norma are some lower volume manufacturers who make some nice match grade ammo in .308, but I'm not sure what hunting cartridges they offer right now. High quality stuff, though.

Thanks for the kind words.
I agree it's very important to push the proper hunting bullet to the proper velocity. I've killed a bunch of deer w/ Nosler Ballistic Tips in my handguns. My top velocities run 200-300 fps less than the same load in a rifle. It's not uncommon to hear about "failures" w/ the NBT where a deer runs off from what should've been a mortal shot. Dropping the velocity a little changes the NBT from a fairly fragile bullet to a deep penetrating bullet.
