I had a tekonsha (sp?) Progressive controller in my last truck and it was awesome. Worked great.

What are you pulling it with? Curt makes good brake controls, Tekonsha, like the other poster said. Look for a controller that has a small footprint, Curt actually makes a Bluetooth version that is very portable. Once they are set up properly you’re good to go.

Save your trucks brakes some wear.
I would pull that without any trailer brakes. But I have a 6.7, with about 8 to 10+ the trailer brakes work well. I can stop my truck with them.

Its standardized. Any controller will do. You may have to wire it into your 7 way. To set gain drive on level road, start at +4 or +5 and see what happens when you brake. You want to find the gain that CLEARLY stops the truck with mainly trailer brakes and then back off by 1 unit. You dont want to feel the trailer sropping the truck, the goal is to match.
Increase gain in hilly areas or in windy conditions (braking the trailer will stop sway).

I bought a Tekonsha controller from etrailer.com. Works great.
Your truck should have a pigtail or connector under the dash for connecting the controller to 12V, ground, brake light signal and trailer brake circuit. Etrailer might have that info or check your owner's manual.

Etrailer.com is a great resource for this stuff. Start your research there. Any controller will make the trailer brakes work, some have more features than others. If you're going to pull that thing out west I recommend getting a progressive controller, its a major step up in tech compared to an old school unit.
No matter what, get the adapter harness for your model truck. It makes it a plug and play job.
