Need a versatile rod that will handle species like snapper and ajs that won't break the bank. Any recommendations are appreciated.

DAIWA Saltist have been winning a lot of praise and are super light tough and pretty hard to beat, if you use a rod a lot get as good as you can . Just like scopes It is not worth skimping on either.

What's "break the bank"? The saltist recommended is a good rod. If you want to go even cheaper a heavy ugly stick tiger lite will get the job done. Put a shimano spheros or penn battle reel on there and you're good to go.
Pass on cheap low ratio conventional levelwind reels and rods. Cranking snapper and AJ's up from any depth on those things is a bitch.

Not familiar with their offshore line, but their inshore line isn't worth a shite. I used one once and it was like casting a telephone pole.

Well, that's because they are "budget rods".
But, their offshore jigging line does have decent enough lifting power for snapper and AJs if cash is tight. Wouldn't use them for anything beyond that.
