I have a 308, 7.62x39 AR, and a .223
Out of all those I'd probably grab the 223. Weight and reliability being the two biggest factors.
Like the idea of a 10/22 and would be a second choice.
But if any need for some sort of knockdown the 556/223 would push it over the 10/22.

The ultra compact Ruger 22 Charger with a binary trigger and folding stock makes it a semi-automatic for hunting small game & birds, or it can be used as a self defense machine gun against a hoard of zombies. Small enough to put in a backpack and you can carry a lot of ammo on daily hunting or reconnaissance missions during SHTF.

.22 LR of any type

If strictly for hunting, I'd go something .22 (anything up to a whitetail), if for protection, I'd go 5.56, if for both, 5.56.

I bought a bolt swap kit that let's you shoot 22LR out of your 556.
Gets you a 5 inch group at 50 yards with shite but ammo.
If you buy the velocetor or minimags it puts you right on it.
cmmg 22lr kit.
I can confirm the mini mags group very well. I couldn't get a hold of the velocitor and they are twice as much. Mini mags cycle through better as well.
Bulk ammo shite would have ejection problems until I broke over about 70 rounds or so break in.
