I'm not sure what is best but sherburne and Indian bayou (not wma but public land) both offer a lot of opportunity. If you could take him during the week (maybe check him out early one day and be a hero?) you could easily find a place all to yourselves as together it's around 80k acres. I've had good squirrel hunts in the afternoon. I fund a lot of them in cypress trees on both places. If you can scout before hand and find a couple spots (areas not too thick for you both to walk) i would try do do that. IB has some trails that might be good for y'all. Thermacell and watch for snakes and ought to be fun. Also sherburne has camp grounds.

Sherburne was pretty good last year. I hunted the North side of Indian Bayou the past few years and didnt even see one squirrel last year in there. A few years ago you could have got your limit in 2 hours there. I dont know if they moved or what but it was lacking the past few years.

I like to go to the nasty swamp areas of IB where you wouldn't expect to find squirrels.

They have a pamphlet to sign and keep carry on you, only thing you need (not sure if '17-'18 pamphlet is out yet). Off the east levee will probably be your best bet.

Do you and the boy have bicycles? On the east side of IB, there is a trail system the parking lot south of the ATV parking area. No ATV's are allowed on the trail I'm speaking of. If you are willing to ride a bike or put in some walking, you can access some good blocks of woods that don't get messed with because they take sweat equity to access. You stand a good chance of seeing a squirrel if you can locate ridges with oaks. I have run across many of these areas while turkey hunting. Also, hunting around water this time of year can be more productive than the bone dry woods close to the levee.

Good luck and kudos to you for putting in the effort so that your kid can have a good hunt.

thanks i will take all of this into account. also we have bikes and will ride them to achieve good hunting ground. I have been spoiled with hunting leases until this year so i will put in the hard work to have a great hunting season!

A little far but kisatchie has a youth squirrel hunt the weekend before regular season.

Also the squirrels are much more predictable in the piney woods. The creek bottoms will have the higher concentrations. And there are fewer hunters and more room to spread out

Bone dry? where do you live? I can't even cut my grass at home. If it is dry, Harvey about to take care of that for you.
