I can find you a 4x4 for 5k that meets all of the above with under 120k on it.
I'm in the same boat (hah) as the OP more or less and have been looking at 4x4 in a similar price range. What vehicle are you looking at that can be had for $5k with under 120k miles on it? Genuinely interested.

Two generations of Nissan xterra. And the occasional sequoia.

Fair enough. Cheapest I can find online is around $8k but I'm assuming you have some connections that get you access to better prices than what I can find online.
ETA: I'm also only searching within 200 miles of OKC which is probably affecting my results considerably.

Search Dallas and Houston Craigslist and be ready to pounce when they pop up.
I got mine with 108k for under 4k.

My only thought that hasn't been mentioned. Driving 60 miles a day and trying to save money with a baby on the way. Does it make the most sense to buy an older model truck that's going to be a gas guzzler and drive that much?
A brand spanking new Nissan Versa would be a better option. $12k brand new and it does nearly 40mpg on the interstate.
I wanted to say it earlier but held my tongue, but buying a 10 + year old truck to save money is completely ridiculous.

Well here ya go...
I did the same thing.
Found. 2002 f150 fx4 4 door with 120k miles. Paid 8k.... Needed seat covers and rear window seal.
Best price with a 4 door is going to be a chevy avalanche pre 2004. The 5.3 is a great motor. My buddy at work has 269k miles on his. The bed space might be an issue.
If you look hard enough you can find them. Best price is going to be the avalanche by a good margin. Not sure why. Probably because the big plastic armor looks kinda shitty. Under that though is a good vehicle.
Look them up. It's 4 door. Solid. Can get 4wd.

I dont disagree, but I want/need a truck, so I'm going to get one.
I'll be paying mostly, if not 100% cash. In about 2 years I'll sell it and in this market, probably get back what I paid, or close to it and get a nice new fancy truck.

5.9 Cummins or the 7.3....best motors ever. Easily get half a million miles with minimal money put in truck. I on the other hand have a 99 Dodge 2500 3/4 ton 4x4 8.0 liter that sucks my wallet clean everytime I sit in it. Its a fun truck though.

For example, I would have no problem towing that boat with a Nissan Xterra 3 3,
I'm going to have to call BS on this. I have a 3.3L Xterra that I bought to flip. That thing is severely under-powered. I have to floor it to get it to go up hill. No way it will tow anything.

This is what we refer to as shitting in one hand, and wishing in the other.

Looking at what I paid for mine, I might be able to get close to what I paid for it two years and 40k miles ago. Once you go below $15k, they lose value much more slowly

Unless something breaks, or the suspension has been neglected.

Would you do a private party sale on a car with something broken? Probably not.
Older shite is also easier and cheaper to fix, plus you have the benefit of not having a monthly note to worry about. I could put four shocks on my truck for under $100 in about two hours

This only applies to people who can wrench on their own junk. You also picked the cheapest and easiest example of suspension parts.
There are lots of ways to skin this cat, and I'm not convinced any are significantly better. You could almost mortgage a new vehicle with a warranty if your plan is buy in the $12k range only to sell it for $10k 2 years from now with the intention of rolling that $10k back into another truck. If you stretch that cost over the life of a loan it may not be all that much different.

Shocks wouldn't exactly be my biggest concern
Posted on 9/9/16 at 11:34 am to jimbeam
You're not kidding. You could spend 10% of the coast of the vehicle right out of the gate if it needs control arms and ball joints. There are all sorts of $1k issues that can pop up on a car at any point.
It's a different conversation entirely if he said he was going to buy a decent $12k truck and drive it until its worthless. Banking on being able to get your money back out of a that kind of vehicle is a hard plan to commit to. It's one of those things you better plan on keeping for ever unless you get lucky and the right buyer comes along. 2 years from now we might have a $20k 1/2 ton budget diesel on the market, you just never know what could happen that could devalue your truck.

That's at least 13k lbs behind mine. 6.0 problems.
But hey, I'm sure you know what they can move along.
They are rated for 5k lbs
Posted on 9/10/16 at 10:05 am to X123F45
How can your's pull 13k pounds, yet mine won't do up Signal Mt.? What is wrong with the one I bought?

Nothing. What he is showing is not proof of towing capability. Zero hitch weight, and the trailing vehicle is using it's own breaks to stop. If you put all that shite on a trailer and hitched up that 3.3 the nissan would snap in half.

It was actually using the brAkes of its trailer to stop.
Having said that, I routinely tow a tandem axle trailer with multiple cat and Detroit heads on it to Houston. That's well over 7k lbs and I do not have a brake controller.
