Best time of the day to fish for gar?

I've heard two sets of opinions, and both are dead set in what they believe. One group of people say hottest part of the day (noon-3pm), the other group says at night.
Personally, I've had the most luck mid day in the scorching heat. What about you?

In my experience, the best time of day to fish for gar seems to be when I'm NOT fishing for gar!

Serious question, what do you do with them when you catch em?
I've always heard they were a pain in the arse to clean.
We fished the spillway a couple weeks ago and they were EVERYWHERE! Saw quite a few over 3 feet long.

I see the most activity in the afternoon when it's balls hot and the sun is just getting ready to start setting.

I lurk over here. Need to start posting more
Also, for TTT, caught this one right before sunset if that helps with the OP. Lots of activity started happening around that time, actually.

I know in the marsh in Vermilion Bay and Pecan Island, the old guys sit there with big arse rod and reels, shrimp on the bottom.
All day.
Catch some big arse gar fish too.

To the OP, I was inclined to say night since we used to catch ours in trammel nets in White Lake; then it dawned on me how many I see walking the bayou in the middle of the day.
Thus, I say anytime is a good time for gar.

what's the best way to catch them? I see them out on the lake I live on quite often and have thrown stuff at them and gotten them to chase but haven't been able to hook one.

I attached a 1ft steel leader to a treble hook with some shrimp and they bite like crazy. Let them take the bait for at least 60 seconds before setting the hook
