No ducks.

Idaho has pronghorn, elk, moose, wolves, grizzlies, black bears, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, whitetail, mule deer, fly fishing, incredible hiking/camping and the edge of yellowstone, desert for atv/offroading, pheasant, duck, grouse, turkey, quail (northern bobwhite & california), varmint & predator hunting, and chinooks/sockeye/steelhead/muskie/pike/cats/bluegill/crappie/bass/perch/walleye/sturgeon/tons of trout. And Idaho may not even be best, as it doesn't even touch the coast. Lots of diversity in this country when you broaden your perspective.
Yeah, Idaho gets overshadowed by it's neighbors but maybe it's a good thing. You could pretty much pick anywhere within the red line (depending on your preferences) and have a great diversity of experience

Yeah its a trade off. Tennessee could have an argument as there is better proximity to duck hunting, without losing the mountains, coldwater fishing and larger game, but landlocked obviously. Gain a NP too.
I guess we could throw in VA too.

Those of you saying states like Colorado, California, Wyoming, and Idaho, that isn't really a fair comparison with the landmass.

I wouldn't even pick a whole state. Northern Idaho, Western Montana, Northern Cal, Western Oregon or Washington....
Hell, within 200 miles of Seattle or Portland you have an incredible diversity of outdoor activity, including saltwater fishing. Same with Northern California.
Throw in skiing, hiking, camping, etc...and it's not much of a contest.

Lousiana/Mississippi/Arkansas have something to say about that.

Bend, OR
Redding, CA
Boise, ID
Missoula, MT
Jackson, WY
Reno, NV
Glenwood Springs, CO
Logan, UT
Lincoln, NH
Bangor, ME
Are all places surrounded by awesomeness that still include the amenities of a city.

No doubt. It all depends on your preferences.
Point being, you can do almost or all of what you can in the mid south region and more, plus an infinite more amount of public land.
It will come down to preferences, but the NW has a good 4 seasons, abundant hunting, fishing, other outdoor sports....mountains, coast, fewer roads...small game, big game, saltwater, freshwater...mountains, plains, desert, running streams, hiking, climbing, rafting, kayaking....

Not a big fan of Alaska. Guess all the TV shows ruined my expectations. I rather out west to north west in the lower 48. Maybe NY to Maine if something close to AK.

Central and Northern ID is amazing. It's basically Montana, without the traffic.

I'm sure other states have better in some categories, but I like Louisiana just fine because of the balance overall with emphasis on salt fishing and the rigs for spearfishing along with good freshwater fishing and decent hunting.

Idaho gets overshadowed
Where was it in Idaho that you liked so much? We're doing another extended summer trip in the camper van; this time it's western and northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Glacier. I know nothing about Idaho and not much about Oregon really. We're looking for outdoor/off the beaten path kind of stuff. Mostly hiking and places to put the inflatable kayaks and maybe fish some. If I remember right there were a couple of small towns in Idaho you liked a lot.

I think GA should be an honorable SE mention on the diversity front. Great deer hunting and freshwater fishing, decent saltwater fishing. You can hike the AT if you desire, and there are some crags you can get into.
But, as far as major US cities down here, I can't think of anywhere else where you can fly fish, hunt and fish for bass with the skyline of a 6 million person city in the background.

Stanley, Sandpoint, Wallace....

Visit the Joseph/Enterprise area of Oregon. NE corner and an oasis sorta in the middle of all that arid flatness.
Bend is a great jumping off point to the central Oregon Cascades, and you can bet it will be dry. 300 plus days of sun a year.

It's not for everyone, but I don't think anyone takes reality shows very seriously.
I've got world class ...everything...within 10 miles of me. From hunting, fishing, skiing......
There is no one "Alaska" as it's extremely diverse.

Wonderful place, high desert location.
You mentioned Bangor, and Maine is overlooked. It's the best "Outdoors" location IMO East of the Mississippi.

Texas has close to 900,000 acres of public land. Problem is it can be spread out.
From what I'm seeing it's actually got 3.2 million acres of public land if you include military bases.

quote:Central Oregon, couple hours to big cities, tons of breweries, couples hours to coast, camping/hiking, hunting, fishing, great skiing, east of Bend is desert for offroading with lots of conservative gun nuts. It's a cool town that has it all.
Bend, OR
Maine's coast is unbelievable and their moose herd is 75k+. The fishing is great too.
