Leaning towards montana 600 with lake vu hd. Any previous experiences with handhelds or suggestions welcome. What says OB?

Does that app pull up detailed satellite images, like for navigating through flooded timber in the morning?
I need an app that can track my route from a pinned location, gives me a detailed satellite image and works on gps, not phone service, so I can use it in remote areas.....

I'm not sure if it tracks your route, as I have only used navionics on a lowrance gps unit. However, it is the best gps software I have seen. All satellite imagery. I am pretty sure I remember someone posting on this site that it works off gps and will work even if no phone service is available.

But for 10 bucks I will try the Navitronics first

Navionics app on an IPad in a waterproof life proof case, with their water proof charger cord hooked into a cigarette lighter.
Then get a goofy iPad monitor mount slap it all together and you have a GPS map you can see.

I've got an older Icom, marine VHF radio with GPS and paid around $250 for it. Also use it for hiking. I wouldn't spend $600 on a hand held.

Dick I have it and it's not the best for timber. It will track your route but I have found that if you take the app off of display (still running in the background) that it will jump from the last place it was displaying to your current location. It also doesn't allow you to fully utilize aerial imagery. It blocks out water bodies rather than showing the aerial imagery from bing or google maps which isn't good for timber hunts. The level of detail also leaves much to be desired. It does use true GPS rather than cell service though.
With that said it's well worth $10

I just like to be able to glance down and easily see.
Hiking that's no problem, driving in a boat I usually need to be looking around and forward more often than down.

I have the navionics app for my iPhone.
It is handy but it doesn't work without phone service.
I remember reading on The Hull Truth about a GPS app that worked without any phone service but it was around $50.00 if I remember correctly.

Your doing it wrong, you may have to play with your setting but mine definitely works without phone service once you download the area map. Use mine as backup to my lowrance when running offshore.

Correct, you have to download the map prior to going out of cell range.

But if you go out of cell range, what is the phone using to update your position?
We use Garmin Montana and Oregon for touch screen
Also use the 78's
All work well just check the description for the particular model and see which mapping best fits your needs
