I have a buddy that was a guide for a while and won all kinds of duck call competitions. He strictly uses Haydel's.

Says the Duck Commander ones only work in flooded timber

either your buddy is wrong or you're paraphrasing him incorrectly

they work anywhere...just may be more effective in flooded timber

He did a bunch of them growing up in Lake Chuck, but said he hasn't done one in probably 20 years.

I have always just screwed around with Duck calls, but he can call some fricking ducks. I hadn't ever been with someone who could actually call and never gave two thoughts to ones that passed, but he sure as hell can turn them around quick
