Looking to buy some land in the country to use as a hunting camp. I will need to store equipment there like tractor, tools, bush hog, etc. eventually will build a lodge or put in a trailer. This is a high crime area in the middle of the Miss Delta. How do I keep from getting ripped off when I’m not there? Anyone found good security measures to help thwart the meth heads and thieves?

TIA

How far do you live from it and how often do you plan to visit it?

We have similar situation with a camp in NELA, backs up to public land. Occasionally would have stuff go missing. We put the biggest fattest locks on everything, welded bars over windows. Always took ATV UTV and tractor keys home, never left them up there. Lastly, hired a trustworthy local to drive out there 2-3 times a week n check on things. We let him sleep there off season when his old lady rode his arse too hard :)

Yeah, I’m concerned that I might get picked clean if I don’t prepare properly. There is one way in and one way out of this place and surrounded by other farm land. There are two families that live on the road going in and I would hope to befriend them and get them to help look out or food, booze, etc. I like your idea of hiring a local, that might a good approach.

The Delta is a really poor area. Great camera system, hire someone you can trust to look after it, and let people know you and give them your contact info. Meet the neighbors.

If you can hire someone to look after it I'd go pick up some big dogs from a shelter. I don't know how well fenced in you are though.

Crime stats are horrible. Nearly 2.5 X the national average for, property crime and 3 X for violent crime. The property holds a lot of duck and deer though, so if I get it, I will have to figure this out quickly.

Find out who farms the land around it and introduce yourself to the farmer. Shoot the shite with him one evening over a couple beers on the turnrow. I doubt he would mind looking in whenever he is around your place.

You really have to be more worried about property crimes. They are rampant in the Delta. They know where you live, when you leave, what you have, etc. They are always stealing shite.

The dogs sound like a good idea. I might fence in about 3 acres and put some dogs out. That and getting to know my neighbors may be my best primary defense.

A few guys at my father in laws camp have 40’ shipping containers they use to store things. They have a welded plate over the lock so you can’t use bolt cutters on it but would have to use a plasma cutter or torch to get in. If someone has that much time and dedication though I don’t know what would stop them.

Meeting the trustworthy locals is probably your best bet but shouldn’t be your only plan.

Good advice on the shipping container. I’m trying to understand how the good guys get past the welded plate if irs over the lock?

They make locks that bolt cutters can’t handle. Of course a cutting torch or angle grinder is a different animal, but if they’re bringing one of those they’re getting in anyway. Locks or chains with hexagonal shackles/links are damn near impossible to cut with standard bolt cutters

Lock your tools, atvs, etc in a shipping container.

timed lights to go off and on

security monitors with good resolution and a hard drive to record everything

good perimeter lighting around all buildings, fence lines, and outside equipt.

lastly keep all easy target sellable stuff in the attic under a blanket so nothing can be seen from windows worth seeing. this includes leaving curtains/blinds open so you can look in windows and see there is nothing to steal so they have no reason to break in. crooks want easy scores with something of value there in clear sight to be worth it, you want to help them see its not even worth breaking your window.

This may sound silly. Put signs up saying property under video surveillance or something to that effect.

It’s the prevention that you want. Anything to make the shitheads think twice and move on to an easier target. Can you gate the entrance to prevent someone from driving all the way up to the place?

Every little thing helps. Make sure you don't look like an easy target. Locked gate for sure. Security signs definitely.

I'd get one of those cell phone game cams for the entrance that texts you a picture. Put it at your entrance, since you said its one way in one way out.
