I wear just the liners when it's warm. Like the feeling of my feet being able to breathe.

You know it's cold in LA when you have two sock threads competing on the OB.
I just wear 1 pair of wool socks.
The key is the wool percentage. Most "wool" socks you buy at walmart only have about 8% wool. That's why they cost $3.99 and suck arse.
I have a few different pair, but my favorite are some MPW over the calf 16" 88% wool socks. Whether I'm wearing waders in the water, or lacrosse grange knee boots on a open ladder stand my feet don't get cold that often.
It's pricey for socks, but you get what you pay for.

Thin dress sock first and then a good wool sock on top.
This-a thin polypropylene sock first and then a good wool sock. The Army surplus wool socks aren't bad for layering like this. Allows good movement which is essential in keeping your toes and feet warm.

I've worn the UA coldgear boot socks with Alphaburly Sports in temps to the low 20s with no problems.

I wear smart wool. You are saying best so as long as you don't mind spending $20 on a pair of socks then that's what I recommend.
I get this Merino Wool blend 4 pack from Costco for about $12. They're great.
