Ranger aluminums are made by Johnny Morris/BPS. The boats in recent years aren’t even close to the Forrest Wood Ranger.
I actually had a Ranger dealer convince me not to buy the RT178 five years ago. I had money in hand and after an hour long skull session, he suggested Sea Ark, G3, or Xpress.
There’s reasons a 178, at 17’10” is only rated for a 75hp motor. It’s basically a Tracker with better carpet.
With that said, the 188P with a 115 is probably a good boat.

Has something changed in the last few years? I looked at them 5 or 6 years ago and they were solid boats. Foamed in like the fiberglass ones. The videos I watched were unreal.

It changed when BPS bought them out.
I’m not saying today’s Rangers are terrible boats, but there’s no way the workmanship and detail is what it used to be. I’m sure there’s Ranger owners that love their boats.

The dealer I dealt with convinced me against the 178 when he pointed out that the transom and rear of a 178 is exactly like a Tracker. That, and the fact that a 17’10” inch boat should be capable of handling more than a 75 hp engine.

I bought an 1810 G3 and loved it, except it was too much boat for me. I got rid of it and bought an Xpress H17 and I’m as happy as a mole in loose dirt!!
