I am looking for a home defense gun, to accompany my pistol, and I am looking to skeet shoot with friends. I know a pump is not the tool of choice for skeet, maybe if I like it enough I will step up to an over under.

Can you give me any of your personal pros and cons on these two weapons?

If you want it to double as a HD/range gun, do what I did. Buy a 4 round 870 with an 18" barrel and get an additional barrel for skeet shooting.

Pump is fine for skeet shooting dude. I use a pump shotgun for everything.

I have a SuperNova and love it. Only con I'd say is the weight. My brother has an 870 wingmaster and that thing is much lighter carrying it through the woods. Only time that's really an issue though is rabbit hunting I find anyway.

Don't buy a new 870. They are junk. Mine was constantly double-feeding and the extractor missed the shell nearly every first shot. Wasn't the shells I was using either, because I bought a Stoeger 3000 that hasn't failed a lick.

Not much experience with the nova though only shot my buddies a few times. They seem decent though.

Now, if you can find an older 870 express or wingmaster in good condition I'd get it over the nova.

I bought mine this past summer and it runs like a top. The finish sucks pretty bad, but I expected it for $350.

Bought mine in the summer too. Paints shite, and it fricked up several times early in the season, and by several I mean every hunt.

Do note that I love the old 870's and I was raised shooting an 870 20g. Don't take it as I'm saying I'm not an 870 fan, because that's simply not true.

870 is one of the finest guns ever made.

The old ones are definitely better. I grew up hunting with an old wingmaster.

But the new ones are by no means bad. They're still great shotguns, very reliable.

I still stand fast on the 870 being the best all purpose shotgun out there.

Step up and buy an O/U for skeet. Why? Wanna look like a blue blood douche with your O/U with a ported out barrel? If you can shoot it doesn't matter.

Believe me I did too before I got this one. I would still love to have a wingmaster 12 with a 28" ribbed barrel. Hell of a gun.

I have a Benelli Nova 18.5" tac. Great shotgun especially since it was only about $15 more than a similar 870 and has a 3.5" fully chromed chamber and barrel. Rifle style sights on mine though you can get one with a ghost ring setup for a little more money. Easy to take down and clean and the action has slicked up nicely after being worked a few dozen times. Won't find many accessories for it though.

I shot a wingmaster for years and loved it. Bought an 870 supermag 2 years ago for my oldest son and its a jamomatic. Had it worked on several times. Google search and the newer 870's are having issues. . I currently shoot a supernova and love it.

Got a newer 870 and I had quite a few feeding and ejector problems this year. Either gonna send it in or get a new gun

Cost me 5-10 geese I'd say.

Same thing with mine. The ejector would miss and leave the empty shell in the chamber and stop the next shell from going in and the plate would be stuck up. I'd have to pry the unshot shell out then hold the ejector down for it to grab the empty one in the barrel.

Nah man I've got a stoeger now that I got for graduation and it hasnt given me a single problem. I'd recommend one to anybody looking for an affordable good working auto loader.
