headed to Pensacola next week and was hoping to wet a line early one morning with the kids (4 and 3 years) since they will be up at 630 am. we will be staying on the peninsula with gulf to one side and dock to the bay on other side. Im used to bass and inshore fishing for reds/ trout but wondering about advice for fishing from the beach or off dock in bay. what type of set up? bait? how far out to cast? what kind of fish (if anything) will we catch. any insight appreciated

There's a lot of youtubers you can binge on for info.

bama beach bum, bama saltwater, anglerup with brant

But for some quick info, here's the gear I use.

10' surf rod
3000 series reel
sand spike rod holders

I usually do 30# braid to a black barrel swivel and then 20# flouro.

The easiest way to fish with this is with a pompano rig. I always bring sand flea and/or crab taste fish bites. You can also bring a rake or something to find real sand fleas or crabs. But you can toss this out into the surf with a 1 or 2oz pyramid sinker and you will at least catch lady fish that you can turn into cutbait for reds or possibly even sharks.

Also, as the rig name suggests, pompano.

The other way to fish with this gear is carolina rig. That's better with cut bait or live bait. You probably know how to fish that.

With both of these methods, just chunk one out really far, chunk another out half that distance and see where you catch.

The other way to fish is to bring an 8' med-heavy rod with a big top water plug or a 1.5oz spoon. I like this style of fishing because you wake up early and just go for a beach walk. You will eventually see feeding action and you just cast right into it.

That's as quick as I can make it. Honestly beach fishing is best just chilling with your cart, your chair, and a few beers waiting for your rods to bend.

I hate to be that guy over and over again, because I answer the same every time.

When you mention kids, they want to catch something quicklike and often.

I buy one sabiki rig for two rods.

Cut the 8-hook rig in half……4 hooks per rod. It’s not that you will catch four at a time. But you get robbed often.
I tie my own with longer shank hooks but that from years of surf fishing. Same rig used for the marsh in the back. You can use much lighter weights out there if you’re on a dock.

Get pea-sized cuts of shrimp and toss with a 1 oz pyramid wt into surf. Don’t have to cast far at all.

Also try fish bites….stays on hook better than shrimp.

You can even tie line to line.

It’s been my favorite way to get my kids into fishing.

Hilton head is full of pompano and whiting (or Sea Mullet) and I assume Pensacola is the same way, yet much clearer water.

Lastly, kids love the cast net.

Good luck.

I spent the last week on Cape San Blas and fished for 6 days.

Hard heads and sharks, lots and lots of sharks.

Maybe I’m spoiled from fishing coastal LA marshes and offshore, but I think this will be a huge waste of time unless you just enjoy the process.

I just worked a job in Pensacola for 6 months and never saw a fish caught. I saw one in an ice chest.

If you want to catch fish in Pensacola you have to be on a pier or a boat. The beach is trash for catching fish.

It's a fun activity. Pompano for dinner is always a win.

Pensacola is pretty good fishing area. I've done will inshore, near shore, and offshore. It's not like marsh fishing in LA which is why you might be having some trouble.

In that I can’t catch 25 trout in a couple hours, yes. If you enjoy catching 1 catfish every couple trips and 1 pompano per season, sure.

I take it you haven't gone fishing with anyone local over there.

I fished the surf around this time of year last year not too far from P-Cola for a week. Pompano double rig. One hook baited with shrimp bites, one with sand flea bites. Everything in the ocean preferred the shrimp flavor over the sand flea flavor 100-0. My local buddy in P-cola told me to use the shrimp flavor, but I thought I knew better can got the sand flea also. I should have just listened to him.

OP- this topic comes up at least once a month here. Scroll back through a few pages for identical topics for the area- P-cola, Orange Beach, Destin, etc. Lots of recent relevant info.

Interesting. Generally I catch fish I can use as live bait or cut bait on the sand flea. This would be small jacks, lady fish, etc.

You're right though, I should've said shrimp flavor. Usually, though, I just get actual shrimp dead or alive.

Here's the problem with that. I've been down there almost every year since the the late 80s. I have never seen an edible pompano caught in the summer season.

The best someone can really expect is whiting on dead shrimp, then ladyfish/hardtail/blues on spoons or jigs. I have lucked up and caught flounder on my dead rigs, but those were rare. Then there is the shark thing that I just have no interest in and I wish people wouldn't do.

I’d go fish at Navarre. You can catch whiting. Pompano will be tough. They don’t turn on gill the fall. Fish early and throw topwater. Can catch lady fish, reds, Spanish macs, bluefish, etc
