I understand not wearing them offshore and even some inshore, but in freshwater you never know if you might hit a random stump or some dumbass like in the video will be rounding the turn from the opposite direction at WOT. I'd rather not chance it.

That was a pretty stupid move on this guys part. Seen the video before, still pretty sobering to the affects of being irresponsible on the water. My buddies dad would still be alive today had he been wearing a lifevest and kill switch.

An idiot + inexperienced at crossing a wake.

"life jacket and killcord saved his life"....but his retardedness in the first place put him in a position to risk his life. Should have never gotten in that situation.
In any case, wearing a killcord in bigger boats is your choice but now mandated by LDWF for tiller motors on smaller boats. About 4 years ago, I found a guy drowned one day in Lake Pontchartrain who was still being dragged behind his little 15ft flat with a 25hp tiller motor. No joke. I wear mine in my flat boat (with console steering) religiously ever since then especially when duck hunting and running around in the dark.

Maybe I am wrong...but I lol'd at his dumb arse getting thrown around like a rag doll.
He has to be a complete idiot running that fast over a wake in a bass boat.

You think he swamped anybody in a kayak that day?

Same thing should have happened to me last summer. I was WOT and an unexpected roller came up fast. I was very lucky for that fleeting moment.

This is video from Ross Barnett reservoir in ms. The guy driving the boat is or was a mechanic for a local boat shop "the prop shop". They had worked on the boat and were out checking it out I think. The guy driving has tons of experience but just made a mistake. I don't know him personally but know people that know him. Not saying it wasn't a dumb move but it wasn't due to inexperience. He had experience. It can happen to anyone if you aren't thinking. He was lucky to live

He don't have his trim set right. Idiot.

quote:Now that tugs use the Red River, people have to be really careful. They make a really large rolling wake that runs backward. You really can't see it until you can't do anything about it. I've been airborne before, but always at a good angle to land. Scary shite.

I do not know this guy personally but I know a guy who is good friends with him. The guy driving that boat has tons and tons of hours driving a high performance bass boat. These guys live for speed. I have been driving a high performance bass boat for 30 years and have owned my own for over 20. Though most of my boats are fishing boats, they are still dangerous.
What this shows you is that no matter how much experience you have driving boats that will run in excess of 70-80 or even 90 mph, one wrong thing and you have no way out. No amount of experience will have you prepared for the unpredictable.. The guy in that crash was OK and thankfully he had on a vest and his kill switch was attached.
Lesson learned here, If you play with fire, eventually you will get burned.
My opinion = idiot. All of us who drive boats over 75 mph are idiots.
