The Ohm?
I have an older version. Maybe 8 years old now. Wife used as checked baggage on Frontier in 2014. I'm a little to ul minded to carry a 3 lb pack unless I really need to haul plenty weight like with my Catalyst.

Ohm is 63l
CDT is 54l
ohm 2.0 weighs a little over 2lbs. its what I use, very comfortable.

I managed to make the 38 Exos work for 2 nights and 3 days, but I also dropped off the water beforehand in gallon buckets along the trail.
You can rig the tent to stay between the top section and main section of the bag, or put it where most people put the sleeping bag pad. Once you start getting around 30 pounds, the waist straps on the 38 are borderline useless.

I'm looking to lower my overall pack weight but go further. I just cannot get over how much 5k of calories per day weighs, how much are you bringing per day? I don't mind being hungry, but I also don't want to die on a 3 plus day backpacking single person trip .

I normally try for 2 pounds per day and normally have food left over. I find I am never as hungry as I think I will be.
Normal day for me
Breakfast
2 packs Carnation instant breakfast in 16 oz water as a shake. If it's hot I'll add instant coffee instead of making coffee.
Instant grits with bacon bits, or oatmeal
Mid morning snack,
Some sort of bar, trailmix, or chese and crackers. Something I'll throw in my hipbelt pockets and eat on the move. Normally I plan on snacking every hour or so.
Lunch.
One of my favorites is chese'its and peperoni or salami packaged for no refrigeration.
Afternoon snacks.
Same as morning. Normally have a reeses or snickers in there.
Supper
Hot meal if I'm actually cooking. I'll do ramen but always add dehydrated veggies. Precooked bacon in cooler weather is always nice to add to any meal. Summer sausage or any meats you can find that requires no refrigeration.
Packit Gourmet is the best
Knorrs rice sides work really good. Just boil water, add rice and let soak til done.
Walk through grocery store and use my imagination sometimes. Get a digital scale at home and weigh everything. Repackage what you can in ziplocks if that saves weight.
I've gone stoveless quite a bit and liked it, it doesn't save much weight just time.
High altitude can kill your appetite. So don't be surprised if you are not as hungry as you thing you should be in the mountains.
I don't really worry about the calories. That makes the cheeseburger and beer at the end all that much better.
ETA- and eat the best thing in your food bag. That way you are always eating the best thing in your food bag.

Thanks for all the input guys. Do any of the local shops carry these "specialty" packs? i.e. not osprey etc.
Otherwise lll be ordering and returning a lot online

No local shops don’t carry them. Ula, gossamer gear, Zpacks online only.
But all have great return policy.

Sounds like work, not backpacking.

Or you just get a bigger bag. I don't have anything outside my pack besides my chair kit and snowshoes. Just me but these aren't the packs of old. If you're attaching or have multiple things outside your pack (Unless mountaineering etc) it's too small.
I don't even put my pad outside my osprey aether 60, which has the straps for it. My Mission 50 is a mountaineering pack but I use it most of the time anyway and it doesn't have pad straps outside the pack.

Typical food I carry. I'm not typical though
I love good food and I'm willing to sacrifice weight. My base weight is light so I'm still never carrying a lot of weight unless it's a longer trip I have to carry it all from the get go.
Breakfast
Pound cake
Mountain House granola and blueberries
Lunch
Tuna packets with crackers
Avocado, pepperoni/salami slices, cheese.
Snacks
Candy, trail mix I buy in bulk and mix my favorites.
Dinner
My first night is always a nice cooked meal unless it's winter time and then it's all dehydrated food.
I pack frozen chicken. It'll be defrosted by dinner time. Pack a zucchini or squash and either rice/pasta/or instant mashed potatoes packet.
Next night is usually cup o noodle soup, . Mountain House lasagna with meat sauce or the fajita mix and I pack tortillas in foil. I use the foil to heat them over the fire.
And I pack beer/wine and always a fifth of bourbon, bulleit rye.

This thread is making me want to get another pack and get out there. Anyone been backpacking with a 4 month old?
Posted on 1/16/18 at 6:34 pm to sloopy
No overnights but my daughter has been out since 6 months. She is 2.5 now. She loves to "pack". Every time she sees her pack, she goes nuts. We were driving on a Forrest service road recently and she thought we were headed out on the trail, it was sad to disappoint.
A couple just completed the AT with a one year old. They are co sleepers though, wouldn't work for us.
You are in north ga, right? Anytime you want to go, start a thread, we will me ya. Supposed to warm this weekend. Thinking of doing a hike around neels gap this weekend.

Beam, six moon designs is another to look at besides zpacks, ula, gossamer. You can get even more basic and ul with several other brands as well.

Looks like I've got some researching to do
Posted on 1/16/18 at 7:21 pm to jimbeam
Yup, get your base weight figured out. All those brands are great. If you have questions give them a call. They will give you great advice. Also whiteblaze has a for sale section, always some lightly used gear on there. But obviously you can't return.

Jealous of y’all living so close to a cool trail.

Half my kids and my kits come from there and hammock forums. You just have to be quick, good stuff goes fast.

Yeah, I'm in ATL. Going to scoop up a new day pack and start heading back out in day trips once it starts to warm up a little.

There is a northface store in the outlets up in dawsonville, sign up for the n ga outlet website and they have a coupon book you can get another 20-25% off. There were a bunch of 15-25l bags there a few weeks ago.
I have a bjorn one air that is almost brand new if interested in buying as well. We use an osprey carrier for our two year old.
