I got a bug recently to purchase a side by side and got a decent deal on 2 Spanish-made AYA Matadors, a 20 ga. and a 12 ga., both made in the early 1960’s.

Anyway, I did quite a bit of research on them before buying, but if anyone has any information about them, I’d like to hear it.

I love side by sides, but don't know all that much about them. Have a CZ Bobwhite 20 ga that I really like. Has been a great gun, especially for the money.

I looked at CZ’s, but got sucked into the nostalgia of the older guns. My brother in law has a CZ 20 gauge SxS, and he can’t miss with it. He took it pheasant hunting in South Dakota 2 years ago and made us with 12 gauge autos look like fools.

Those CZ’s are about the only new “economy” side by sides on the market with a decent reputation. The price for a new one is one reason I went with the used AYA’s.

I paid about $800 for the AYA 20 ga. (3” magnum) and $450 for the 12 ga. The 12 ga. needs some buttstock touchup work.

The CZ is the cheapest one I've found that was acceptable quality. The Bobwhite is discontinued but they will turn up on gun broker from time to time. I have been so happy with mine that I considered ordering a 12 on there the other day. It is really a good utilitarian sXs. I have taken it to west Tx twice on quail hunts and it has performed great. Hammers squirrels. I really really like the little gun. Think I paid 600 for it. Thats pretty close to what they're going for in gun broker. The wood isn't the best, but I don't feel bad about it when I'm hauling through a pine thicket.

There’s some real nice 20’s on Gunbroker and Guns International. The 12’s go for cheaper than the 20’s. I’m now looking for a 16.

Then a 28.

Then a .410.

Damn it.

I would like to have a 12, but after shooting this 20 for a while I really like it. I shoot it much better then my A400 12ga.

Shot my dad's Beretta OU 28ga one day this year in Tx and really liked it as well. Had a Bobwhite 28 on gun broker the other day for 650. Really would have liked to have it.

Just saw that. The 28 is really fun to shoot at birds, just not much room for error.

Dumping 2 boxes of 28 in your bird bag after after carrying 12ga for a couple miles sure is nice though.

I like the Beretta and Browning O/U’s, but I have to be different, I guess.

I really love the nostalgia of the side be sides. I grew up hunting with an old Stevens 12 ga. Killed my first squirrel with it.

For the price, these AYA Matadors are pretty nice. I’m not sure I’ll ever need anything nicer, as I’m buying them to hunt with and not just look pretty.

Damn this thread. I have two cheap sxs. A fox b 20 and s stoeger 20.
I want to get a nice one too but can’t decide if I want another 20 or a 16. And I don’t really know brand new or used. I know it will not be another boat anchor whatever I buy.

I was under the understanding that this was not a "cheap" shotgun.

It’s not a bad gun. All it is, is a fancy Stevens 311 with color case hardened receiver and better wood furniture. The checkering on the later ones is reversed pressed and it is heavy. Like over 7 1/2 lbs for the 20 gauge heavy. I want either a 16 right @ 6 lbs or a 20 under 6.
