Anyone seen a Water Spout before?

When I worked on the oil spill out of Cocodrie we had a freak storm pop up and there were 5 water spouts within a couple miles of us, one just a few hundred yards away. We videoed them, it was pretty cool to see.

Some of y'all really don't know what a waterspout is?

When they come on land do they become tornados?

August 2006 in the northern end of the Biloxi Marsh. I buddy of mine and I were fishing, and this popped up behind us. We actually HEARD it first. When we turned around, it hadn't fully formed yet. It looked like the water at the surface was frothy. I actually at first thought it was a shiteload of bluefish feeding or something. Then the funnel formed, I cranked the motor, and we ran around the other side of an island. Took out my trusty old Motorola Razor and snapped this pic. That's the most imposing spout I've ever seen.
But like Boat...I'm amazed some people on an outdoor board have never seen one. I see them quite frequently...and sometimes multiple at one time.

quote:Yes. But they are almost always EF-0 tornados, and die almost immediately on land. EF-0 is maybe 70-80 mph winds.

Like I said, ALMOST always. I'd suspect the one in my pic was a bit stronger. It was the most perfect waterspout I've ever seen, and the widest funnel I've seen on one. I didn't even catch it at it's best in that pic. I had to make sure it wasn't coming in my direction before I was comfortable snapping pics of it. I was in a 19' bayboat.

Yeah the one you posted looks like a boss

That area is just east of Lake Borgne. I've seen dozens in Lake Borgne over the years, and they're frequent over Lake Ponchartrain as well. Pretty much anytime there's a strong T-storm over water, there's spouts in it. That one was wicked, though. Evil looking bastid. I have pics of others you can hardly tell are spouts.

I've seen them before when crossing the causeway

Lake Borgne, as I was crossing heading to Hopedale during a redfish tourney in 2009. There are actually two in the photo, but only one big one. BSM was damaged during this storm.

The other one barely on the left?
Posted on 5/8/12 at 7:05 pm to Bama and Beer
It's to the right of the big one

i don't remember. I do know it's not the skinny thing on the right...that's a tower of some sort. I just remember thinking I'd go ahead and take a picture since there were two of them. But they were so far away. They held the launch of the tourney for like an hour because of that storm, and considered it far enough away to launch the field. We had to slow down to keep from catching up to the dam storm! That's how we found out about the damage at BSM. When we were passing it, we decided to dock for a few and let the storm continue on...since it was where we were headed. The metal roof over the hoist was gone, and a lot of other metal siding/roofing in the area.
