With good ammo they are pretty much the same thing, 9mm just holds more ammo and has less recoil.

+1

I'll copy and paste one of my bookmarked threads:
__________________________________________________

9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP all pretty much do the same thing. One is light and fast, one is heavy and slow, and the third splits the difference.

40 S&W is a high pressure round by design (basically a permanent +p) so it has an increased slide velocity. This increased slide velocity causes the "snap" some people have described. It also causes the gun to wear out sooner after 1000s of rounds (although it's doubtful any person would ever get them to this point).

I choose 9mm for these reasons:

1. Cheapest ammo (across the board)
2. Higher magazine capacity (in the same sized magazine)
3. Faster follow-up shots
4. Lighter felt recoil

If the difference in foot-pounds of energy is relatively small, it will make no difference at all in the real world. To me at least, a higher magazine capacity is superior to a bullet with a marginally higher velocity or marginally higher muzzle energy. Hunting is a different story... But when shooting 2-legged predators, I feel 9mm wins in service cartridges (the big 3).
