A friend of mine has a pond that's been getting taken over by vegetation. They had originally put carp in there, which worked well for a while, but they seem to have lost them due to either flood or predators. They've since put more in, but they think the vegetation gotten too out of hand at this point.

I don't know what specific vegetation it is, but they've been looking for a specialist to try and fix the problem and seem to have been having trouble finding one.

Best thing to do may be to drain the pond, kill the vegetation, and start over.

ETA: I would contact LDWF or maybe even NRCS for assistance.

No, they aren't draining it, nor do I think that will ever be necessary.

We used "the pond doctor". He came out and used a machine thats on pontoons and grabbed all the grass out. We then got the carp and have been steadily using roundup and other products to keep the grass down.

We also dye the water to help with blocking the sunlight.

The best and most experienced person I know is Mark McElroy, Aquatic Solutions, Baton Rouge. He’s a degreed fisheries biologist with well over 20+ years in aquatic plant management & control. I think he’ll handle out of town work as far as Lafayette but you would need to check with him. LINK.

Should your friend desire to contact him, wait a week as I think he may be on vacation.

You could also contact Mark Shirley, aquaculture extension specialist with the LSU AgCenter, based out of Abbeville. Mark doesn’t do this work but he might be able to recommend/suggest people in the Lafayette area that do. LINK

Ron Boustany (lives and works in Lafayette)...google him and his email will come up. He does this on the side. He helped me with my pond. I worked with him at National Wetlands Center. He knows his stuff. He's got some chemicals that he'll recommend to kill it.
