The bees really get to be a nuisance around swimming pools. Once they find a good source of water, it’s hard to persuade them to go somewhere else.

I placed my hives next to a very small slow moving stream but they are still 1000 yards or so from the house and them deciding they like the wifes pool better is still a concern of mine.

The fact she has eleventy bazillion flowers planted around the pool is likely not helpful.

Nice to know I'm on the right track. I read a lot, but it is good to hear from someone with real world experience.

Sounds like you’ve got it down pat. The thing about beekeeping is that if you ask 10 beekeepers how to do something, you’ll get 10 different answers. In other words, there’s not only one way to do something when it comes to beekeeping.

I'm not able to move them "16" miles away for a few days

This is a thing? They get disoriented that easily?

Bees forage a few miles from the hive. If you move them within in this range, they will use the same cues as before. This will lead them back to their old location. Their navigational skills are so strong you have to trick them. A lot of people will take them miles away for a few days before moving them back to get them to recalibrate.

I moved a hive exactly a mile this morning before daylight. I have the entrance blocked good with limbs. The bees have to almost crawl through to get out. They have been circling the hive big time. I just checked the old hive location and only a handful of bees.

I think a day should be long enough. Once they come out the hive and do their orientation flights, you should be set.

Put it on facebook.

Lots of people have put in request for honey just because i live near them and they only want local honey

Gotcha. I figured that would be a pain in the arse to bottle it all up

Local to your area is the best. Helps me with sinus issues

Good for you. My first year. My ladies are hardly entertaining my supers. Put syrup back on in hopes of just getting some more frames drawn.

It’s really not bad at all. Just install a honey gate spout on a 5 gallon bucket. It allows you to easily start and stop the flow of honey into jars without the mess.

Cleanup is a breeze too. Just put all of your sticky equipment outside near your hives. They’ll clean it up in no time.

Bottling up is very easy with the spouts. We have ours all ready to go. Moved a bunch within an hour if letting people know we had it

My first year as well but I have two hives that are filling out the supers pretty well, one has built out and filled two mediums.

Trying to decide if I would be better off pulling some honey or just doing a few late season splits and dividing the surplus among them.
