For some reason, I have become fascinated with this and am considering designing and registering my own brand....
are there any issues with registering a brand without any intention of actually branding livestock with it?....

hell yeah, man...nothing to hunt and no football to watch...
seriously, this is all pretty heavily regulated and policed... and I don't want to get my arse in a crack over something like that...

I have my own and my son ( 11 years old) just registered his. There is no problem at all with registering a brand without cows. Each state is different in the process but in Alabama it's pretty damn easy. You download the form give them 3 designs and the location where the brand will be placed on the cow. I think 15$ and send it off. They will contact you about which design they choose and then you find somebody to make it.
