I'm not sure but the reel is a 3.5 and the rod has a fighting butt so I'm going to guess either a 7 or 8wt. I haven't seen too many Pro series rods in a 6wt with a fighting butt.

I've got their Kraken

That's a great looking reel. It's really not much more expensive than the Cabela's I'm planning on getting, but I'll get a good discount on the combo. That would be a solid upgrade.

The GPX is a fine fly line that does a great job with larger flies. It's "overlined" in that it's a little heavier than the actual weight, making it load the rod easier.

Thanks. I have it on my 5wt fly rod, but I'm not familiar with how heavier weight rigs play.

That Lamson and TFO is a great deal. What's the weight of the rod?

It absolutely is.

The Konic reel is not as nice as a Lamson Litespeed but it is still very good and comes with their sealed conical drag. Honestly I think the main difference is just the weight of the reel with the Konic being heavier. That lone would push me toward this deal over the cabelas brand reel.

I'm a big fan of Lamson. And yes, the main difference between the Konic and Litespeed is amount of machining. Working parts are identical. I have 3 Radius reels from them that I've had for years.

What are you trying to do with it? If it's panfish or wade fishing spotted bass I like the TFO finesse 7'9" 3wt with an Orvis battenkill click and pawl. TFO also makes that same rod in a 4 and 5wt. Get some of those $25 off $50 Orvis coupons and save a ton of cash on the reel and fly line.

There are some fun glass rods out right now if you're into that sort of thing. Blue Halo and TFO both make good glass rods.

Depends on what you're going to use it for.

My bigger water trout rod is a TFO BVK in 5wt. My small stream one is the one mentioned above - TFO finesse 3wt and could be a good option for you if you went up to a 4wt. I have cheaper reels on both of them b/c they're just line holders. Only on my 8wt did I spend a lot on the reel b/c it makes a difference with 15lb fish.

I'd say it also depends on what sort of trout waters you're going to be on. In our trout waters, you have the potential to hook up with 10+ lb. trout while fishing with a 4-6 weight. You're likely going to be using 6x or 7x tippet as well. In those instances, a high quality reel is an absolute must.

If you're fishing small streams with small trout or for panfish, then, as you said, the reel is little more than a line holder as you're unlikely to ever even put a fish on the reel.

I'm moving to an area with access I great fresh water fishing.

I'd be fishing for panfish and large mouth bass.

Kicking around the idea between a 3-5 wt.

If you're going to be throwing for bass, you might want to bump it up a bit (I use a 6, you could probably go with a 5). I don't use that large of flies for smallmouth on creeks, but if I'm targeting largemouth on a lake, I use some pretty big flies. I even go to my 8 weight at times when bass fishing, though that's not often.

I'll bring the 8 wt but I think it has a little too much muscle ... I guess I feel it's not as sporting as landing a good fish on a 5 wt or less.

Right now, I'm looking at the Clearwater rod and possibly the Clearwater reel. 7'6 5 wt

Any other suggestions?

How big is the water you will be fishing?

I love a 4wt. I have a St Croix 8'6" 4wt that I adore. Would be a great rod for that. However, I'm fishing bigger waters.

Ponds to bayous that shoot off of major rivers.

Mostly panfish but if a carp came glubbing along, I'd certainly try my hand at him.

I have a 4/5 weight 8ft 4 piece that I love. Built it myself on a St Croix SC2 blank. I'm sure they sell a complete rod with those specs.

Alright, BUMP. Over a year later and I never got my fly rod. But this fathers day, I told my wife I want a fly outfit and nothing else. $200-250 budget. Will be used for redfishing in the marsh. Not going after bulls, just slots, but there are some big boys we occasionally hook into, so something that can handle a 12-15lb fish if necessary. Thanks guys!

There's a guy on Microskiff in Mississippi selling a tfo pro 8 wt for about $80. Our you can look into a st. Croix rio santo 8 wt. Colton has their crg ii reels on sale right now for $150. Or a Redington behemoth for $110. Imho, those are the best options for your budget.
