Do you have a ham radio license? It's required in order to use one.

baofeng seems to be the brand of choice when wanting to dabble in the world of comm.

Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood. I own none of these just brand names I recognize.

Although illegal I would recommend an “export” radio for “CB” ops. The RCI 2950 is a good radio, branded as a 10 and 12 meter amateur it can be expanded with a plug in chip to operate on 11m CB band. I’ve had a 2950dx for 8-9 yrs and it’s been a good on, all mobile. They are expensive and might be difficult to get given the tariff situation.

But if you will soon have a tech license you will be fine. A tech lic. allows operation on a narrow range of HF.

I have an Icom for my vehicle, good radio. Yaesu radios are very good but spendy.

I have both a Kenwood and Baofeng handheld. The Baofeng is cheaper and more versatile, but Kenwoods are tougher.

What if you don't have a license? Like inherited a bunch of equipment and just use it? Explain how one would get caught?

I'm a Ham.

I have 2 Kenwoods TH-74 and and F6A. Depends on what you want it for. I have a Yaesu FT-857D mounted in my truck..and in my backpack for portable ops. My Kenwood HTs are used for satellite contacts as well as repeater contacts. Look at where you're going...look up 2-meter and 420Mhz (70 cm) repeaters. Unless you're planning on transmitting simplex only. I'm a General Class Ham and was planning on taking my Extra before all this COVID stuff started canceling tests.

Baofeng seems to be a popular brand these days as far as HTs go.
