I killed 3 colonies a few weeks ago with:
1 gallon hot tap water
1/4 cup dish soap
1/4 vegetable oil
Pour all over ant hill
Ants were all dead next day. Grass is fine.

I'm in the country and the only thing I found to work on ants was Bifen IT. I mix in a tank sprayer and spray the whole yard plus the eves of the house. It takes care of mosquitos, spiders and ants for 3-4 months.
Just make sure to avoid flowering plants so you won't kill bees.

I had a lot of ant beds when I lived in a subdivision and gassed a lit them all. Neighbor said it looked like a miniature Kuwait. Also, had dead patches for years.
