Ants are cannibals. Kick the pile a little, let them swarm out, and spray the hell out of then with any ant killer. The dead will be eaten by the rest of the ants, which will kill them, etc.

I did the Talstar thing Sunday... I'm curious to see how that pricey application works...

Update:

For a while, I've had two different large mulch pile that both had very persistent ant colonies in them. I moved one mulch pile onto the other two weeks ago to prep a garden spot. Probably more ants than I have every seen in one spot in my life. Since then and from all appearances, there is no ant living in the consolidated mulch pile.

I got some from Lowes the other day. Also called chemical name bifenthrin. Talstar is a trade name like roundup.

At this point it appears very true. Like I said, both colonies had been very difficult to eradicate with ant poison. Not a sign of one single ant now. I haven't dug throughout the mulch pile, but have poked and raked around a good bit.
