I am not talking about thumbing my nose at the law. And wearing a pistol on me at all times without a CHL.

Situation. Vacation in the Hill Country. We were in a great place, but at night we were in the WOODS!!! Nothing happened nothing close to unsafe, but was a time when having a pistol around would be nice.

What are the rules? Transporting the weapon with me on a trip. Not on my person, but in car. Just to have in the cabin. Police officers and CHL people tell me what needs to be done to remain a responsible gun owner? A serious question.

I know you want serious answers but I don't have one so I'll just say that I think Texas is the last place you have to worry about gun laws

In your car is no problem. In your hotel/cabin is no problem. Open carry is no problem except when the owner of the establishment says you can't. If your need more specifics you're gonna have to get more specific with your scenarios.

In Texas, the castle law covers your home (obviously), your car, and any place "that becomes a temporary dwelling." A hotel room, cabin, RV, camper, etc. is included in this.

Infidel- Open carry in Texas is illegal. They don't even allowing printing with a CHL.

Correct. I do not have a CHL, but travel many states with work. Being from a small town, I have access to our Sheriff, DA, etc.....as they are periodically close family freinds.
Wondering the same thing a couple years ago, I called the Sheriffs office and asked the Chief what I could and couldnt do in regards to crossing state lines with a firearm:

"As long as you are in Louisiana, you do not need a CHL.....we have you covered. When you cross into Texas - now, thats a different story. They are not friendly to out-of-state residents entering their state with a firearm. Your Louisiana CHL likely would help.....but really need one issued in the state of Texas."

Take it from what its worth. Was told to me by a 30 year law enforcement vet......albeit in a small Louisiana town.

You can have the pistol with you in the car loaded and sitting in the console or some other place that conceals it. One you get to your cabin in the woods you can take your gun out of your car and bring it into your cabin in the woods.

These are the normal everyday rights that you have. No need for a CHL to do these things.

Was not aware that open carry was illegal in Texas. WTF? Never would have expected that one.

that surprises me too.... i certainly wouldn't worry too much about it in vehicle and cabin, just probably wouldn't wear it on my waist while touring the Alamo, or, shopping in Wal Marks...

A very important part about it being in the car though... If you get pulled over, the first thing out of your mouth should be "Sir, I have a pistol in my ____, it is loaded. Just wanted to let you know." It is ILLEGAL not to say this.

They will likely just ask you to step out of the car to process whatever, but it's worth it.

Are you referring to Texas? I came across this in an article on Sportsman about gun rights in Louisiana. It was written in 2008, so things may have changed?

quote:

Possession of a gun in your vehicle is perfectly legal in Louisiana as the vehicle is considered an extension of your home (As it is worded in LRS 14:95.2: “Any constitutionally protected activity which cannot be regulated by the state, such as a firearm contained entirely within a motor vehicle.”)

quote:

Therefore, if stopped by a law-enforcement officer for a traffic violation, it is a good practice to tell him if you have a gun in the glove box on top of the papers he is requesting. If it is not in such an awkward place, where the cop might understandably get excited if he witnesses you fumbling around for records while putting your hands on a gun, you do not need to tell him of the gun — there is no violation of the law in having the gun in your car.

quote:

If you have a concealed-carry permit, however, you are required by law to inform an officer conducting an official investigation that you have a permit, and whether you are in possession of a handgun. If the officer requests, you are required by law to surrender the gun to him while he is conducting the investigation.

Louisiana Gun Rights Article

ETA: I carry a gun in my car. I would probably tell the officer about my gun anyway, just saying it may not be against the law to not tell the officer.

Deacon is correct. In LA you do not have a legal obligation to make the po po aware of a concealed weapon in your car.

You do have a requirement to inform him of a concealed weapon on your person if you are out of the car and must surrender it if he asks you to
