I'm building a rifle and looking at aluminum bottom metal instead of SS for (1) cost and (2) weight. It comes unfinished and I would leave it unfinished. Would there be any reason why this is not good and I need to switch to SS? TIA.

It's bottom metal. Aluminum is just as good as SS purpose wise. SS just looks better.

Built and consulted on hundreds of custom rifles. The majority went with Rem 700 BDL BM that was aluminum. Like everything else these days, prices have gone through the roof. Used take-offs with all hardware could be purchased for $75 ~ $80 5-6 yrs ago. Now prices are pushing $150+ depending on condition and finish.

appreciate the advice, the price diff is $100 vs $200 at PT&G. Going for all silver + walnut look and didnt want to get the raw AL BM and find later that I'm supposed to coat it.

I glass bedded an old 1977 model 700. When I went to disassemble, I broke the old bottom metal

I went back with steel. I can’t tell the difference in weight. But it also didn’t hold the bluing job I did.

Can’t win.

JMO - not sure I would order from Dave at PT&G .... they're having serious QC issues with fabrication and shipping. They got to big, to fast and the business hasn't been the same. It's a shame as I like Dave and he knows his shite especially with reamers. Unfortunately, PT&G has lost a lot of trust in the industry amongst consumers.

Stocky's may have the BDL BM in stock.

Unless someone could find a singular positive experience within the past 10 years with ptg, I'd just pay twice as much and actually get your product.
