I like Echo or Shindiwa(sp?) handhelds. For mowers go with whoever has good service like said. They're all in the same ballpark. Don't cheap yourself out. Do good quality work and more will come.

Yep. He would need a small push mower for really small yard and trim stuff. Toro is making some good stuff I hear.

As far as the enclosed trailer goes... it is more for security of my equipment than anything, but keeping my equipment dry is also important. It is a growing popularity in my area and with a v-nose trailer, I can offset the gas price of hauling. More concerned with parking it in my backyard at night, as I have no room in my garage for the trailer. Thanks for the input though.

There are a lot of ritzier neighborhoods where the occupants will not allow a ZTM on their grass. Alot of people just say sorry and don't price them, but that is the demo I am trying to go for... people who actually have the money and will pay on time for a reliable, professional cut. I have years of experience in golf course grass maintenance, also working for municipalities in landscape mngt, and parks and rec. So, I am not worried about how to make it look good, just what is the best equipment for the task. I will probably stay away from John Deere, but I have also considered Gravely.

OP, I did not read this entire thread. I am on my phone and too tired blah blah blah.

However, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take some time and head over to lawnsite.com

It is an amazing forum that contains everything you could ever want to know about landscaping and lawn care. It saved me so much money and headaches when I was starting my business. There are a bunch of good guys with good knowledge.

I understand the enclosed trailer for security. Got to watch out for folks that think what is your is theirs.

I remember seeing a small ztr that you sit in like a motorcycle. Can't remember the brand. But that may be an option.

Being self employed, keep all your receipts of fuel, repairs, tools, supplies ect so you can write them off for your taxes. Trust me, I've seen too many lawn care guys get into some serious tax trouble by keeping shitty books.

Stealing of lawn equipment is very popular right now. My buddy used to have a lawn bidness, his whole trailer was stolen out of his partners drive way. From a pretty nice neighborhood too.

have to cut alot of yards to get the money back on $20k of equipment, gas, insurance, maintance until then. And thats just to get the money back before you make a penny. Why would you start a business and sink more than needed?

1. Your not gunna need 20,000. More like 10
2. Do not get a John Deere mower. Get a ex-mark or scag. (scag is a little bit cheaper than ex-mark but gets the job done)

Do yourself a favor and get Shindawa weedeaters/blower. They are more powerful and reliable than anything on the market. Initial cost is more, but it will pay for itself in the long run

This is a $20k loan from my father that will be paid back in payments... not like I am dropping the cash and not going to be making money. Like I said earlier, that isn't the issue I need help with.

Thanks for the help otherwise... I will checkout lawnsite.com
