I have hunted Africa 4 times. A 308 is absolutely enough for kudu and gemsbok. Just use a good tough premium bullet and it will work fine. Ranges shot in Africa are usually less than 200 yards. I would use a 180 gr Accubond, Partition, Aframe , TSX or anything in that class and not think twice

My buddy that just got back said one of his companions shot several of even the larger antelope with a 7MM-08. It is VERY bullet dependent. Great tip on bringing gifts. Give them one up front and the other when you leave.

Did South Africa back in June.

Lots of good tips listed.

I’ll add to be sure to have a service register your firearms and get your permits in advance. Saves a lot of time at the airport.

I’m using Highveld for my taxidermy. Good work on par with US quality taxidermy. I’ve been told to expect $3,000-5,000 USD to get my crate back to the States. That doesn’t include the cost of taxidermy.

The Outfitter is gonna do everything he can to have you kill your included package species the very first day. They make their money on getting you to keep shooting the next four days.

For boots; have a look at the Courteney boots with the tire tread sole. For clothes I really like TAG Safari. Well made stuff that won’t break the bank.

Yeah that's my worry for the trip. Need to figure out if its cheaper to pay less for taxidermy there but more for shipping or pay less (I assume) for shipping 1 box and doing taxidermy here.

Anyone have any recommendations/tips on the customs stuff for my gun (if I decide to bring my own, they have said they have some to use if you don't want to deal with the gun/airport hassle) and also dealing with shipping the either the heads or completed taxidermy back here?

Giving this a bump to, thanks again for the recommendations.

I leave 7/16 for the trip so any last minute tips appreciated.

Shipping may cost you more than the hunt.

taxi work, dip, crate, and ship mounts will cost OP $2000
customs charges will be around $1000
plane ticket ... ballpark $2000
figure $5000 before any shots are fired

Africa is easily a $12,000 ~ $15,000 hunt today and that's just harvesting 4-5 of the basic plains game animals which cost around $500 each .... warthog, impala, blesbok, bush pig, duiker, baboon ($100), springbok, steenbok, etc ...

Buddy and I also got a deep discounted trip with Kuche safaris and went with them back in 2016. The guides and trackers were amazing and the food and unlimited wine was great. just can't eat any of the vegetables/fruits.
The owner is an ex-cop and very cool.

Interesting, small world. Any other info or stories you can share about the trip and Kuche?
