Someone mentioned a CC course, I couldn't disagree more. The CC "course" I took was next to worthless.

My advice would be to take the teen shooting with you and make sure they fully understand how the gun functions.

Of course, reinforce all of the cardinal rules gun safety.

Our rules.
No touching ever unless permission granted.
Announce intent to handle the gun.
Handle every time as if loaded
Muzzle pointed away from everyone always.
Drop Magazine, clip, open bolt, clear chamber check.
Never mention guns to friends, especially when they are visiting.
Know where guns are stashed and keep tabs on friends.
No one goes into the gun room, unless permission granted.
or......

ensues!

Chad,

I can only teach what I myself know, and practice. Educating a teenager is, first and foremost, learning and practicing these principles in front of them.

Face it, Teenagers will Do as you Do, not necessarily Do as you Say.

Am I a perfect example? No.

Thanks for the topic. I needed that look in the mirror.

lots of good advice and logic in here.

And thanks for the thumbs up whomever that was, i don't think i ever got one of those before excluding voting for myself which ends up making feel worthless for a few hours.

Talk to your kids friends dads see if you can get everyone in gun safety classes. Injuries happen when it's a friend of your kid who has no education injures someone

I just dont want it to be implied.

When I ask my boys "what is the first rule" the answer must be keep muzzle in safe direction.

I agree you don't want that to be implied. It's definitely part of there are no unloaded guns because if you just dropped one in the chamber would you ever sweep someone with it? No. As long as that's your philosophy whether you put one in it or not, you're always going to be safe.

As many have said, treat every gun as it is loaded.
Guns are not toys, and only to be handled responsibly.
Always handle guns with respect and never, ever let your friends talk you into doing something stupid.
