My family just sold our 5000 acre ranch in Marble Falls, Texas which has been in our family since 1885. I've grown up all my life hunting this large ranch and have had great success but now we purchased 200 acres in Comanche, Texas upon which we are going to do a little deer hunting. What advice would you guys give as far as making a 200 acre parcel attractive to deer? its about 70 percent wooded 30 perent pasture and I've given thought to putting in a food plot but don't know the location. LINK Here is the link to the property. If you look at the aerial view on the bottom of the page, the road going into the property is to the right of the red dot and begins with the long, narrow pasture running from north to south.

TIA for the help!

Our family place is just a shade under 200 acres just on the border of Hamilton/Lampasas county, so you and I are hunting pretty similar properties. Looks like you've already got the water source so my answer is corn, corn, and more corn. There's plenty of deer to go around but if you're surrounded by huge parcels on all sides and especially if you're low-fenced like we are, food is what you need. Probably sounds ridiculous, but we run 5 feeders from September-February and combo that with protein blocks scattered around as well. Is it overkill? Probably. Do we always have plenty of deer to fill the freezer with between 4 hunters? Definitely. I've never messed with a dedicated food plot, only because we haven't seen the need to and don't really have the right setup.

Get ready to enjoy the fact that you can walk to any stand on your property in a few minutes and don't have to make the 10 minute ATV drive at 6AM when it's 27 degrees outside just to get to the best stand on the far side of 5000 acres.

sounds/looks like a good environment. you just need to make your land more attractive to deer than the land around you.

whether that be 'tasty' food plots, or excellent ground cover for bedding and napping.

There are a lot pecan farms in the area and I'm afraid the deer might not be attracted to my land when they have a 500 acre pecan buffet next door. I'm hoping that if I let the cover remain thick that they will bed down and frequent the area often.

Make a cutover near food sources. Like sporttiger said make it attractive and it will be a refuge for them. I think a small 30 acre cutover safe haven for them will hold more big bucks than you think. However you wont have the luxury of holding "your deer" as much as you previously had.

Don't use a 4wheeler or vehicle heading to stands to hunt.

Work, deer pickup - yes.

Hunting - no.

That mistake pretty much killed the few hints I went on this year. The new 4 wheeler was nice to ride, but not when I never see a deer.
