I dont think a retailer is filing an insurance claim over a stolen item worth only a few hundred bucks. I’d imagine Academy would have a fairly decent sized deductible.

The reason for company policies not allowing employees to attempt to physically stop thieves is because the company would rather lose a few bucks worth of inventory to theft than face potential multi-million dollar lawsuits if an employee, thief, or bystander gets hurt or killed in the process of the employee trying to stop a shoplifter.
