I have a buddy who works for academy and they are told in orientation that if they try to stop a shoplifter they will be fired. it probably has something to do with liability. a lot of places have this policy.

that manager should not bother with applying at home depot.

Stealing a fishing pole or a pair of shoes is one thing. Stealing guns and ammo is completely different. I guarantee if that gun was used to kill someone and the surveillance video showed everyone standing around as he left the store, the media would have a field day. This is yet another problem with zero tolerance policies.

Say this guy runs into the restroom and loads up with the gun and comes out blasting..... so many scenerios that could happen and this could have gotten really ugly. I hope the guy gets a better job. He did the right thing IMO.

this stupidity is common when corporations have attorneys who havent been in the real world make policy- they want to limit liability if someone is hurt during apprehension - they dont consider the liability and incredible press if the guy had walked out and shot children at a nearby school - that could shut down their business- the manager deserves a reward

The police report says White told the officer someone had threatened his family and kids. "I stole and I admit to it," the report says White told police. "I will steal again when I get out of jail." White repeatedly said he would shoot someone, according to the police report, and that they'd see him on the evening news. "Just you wait and see," White is said to have remarked.

Court records show White was released from jail on bond on July 6.
Wow.

Big difference between stealing a shirt and stealing a glock.

The store manager is in charge of making sure everyone follows company policy, his actions convinced Academy that they could not trust him to do so, he then put them on blast and convinced the rest of the retail world he was toxic and unemployable.
Not bad for a days work, welcome to the fry line at Wendy's.
The reason for this policy in almost all retail settings is the merchandise is insured, the actions of the employees are not. There have been far too many mistakes made over the years and this is the result.
In fact, the perp is almost 100% going to sue Academy and win here, theft has not occurred until after the item leaves the door despite what we all think about this situation.
While this ended as well as possible it could have very easily gone another way if he had another gun and opened fire when cornered.

I also can’t stand news sites that don’t have a comments section.

Well, they would use it as an excuse to prove that no one, not even gun retailers, are responsible enough to own guns. So I don't get your point.

Care to wager 10K on that statement?

Couldn't have said it better myself. At the very least that stolen gun would have been eventually linked to a murder or violent crime, at which point Academy would be likely liable and vulnerable in court...they should be kissing this guy's arse. Is it just me or does our society today seem to villainize its upright and honorable citizens and victimize its criminals?

That is because we have the gift of hindsight on this one, now imagine one of the myriad of alternative endings that are not so nice, the OB would then be out for his head for endangering others for no good reason.
How about this headline, Store Manager tries to physically stop shoplifter who opens fire into crowd at checkout lines killing a mother of two and 6 month old, should they kiss that ones arse as well?
It is great that this ended well but the odds outweigh it happening very often in such a clean fashion and that is why all retailers have this policy.
FYI Casinos have the same policy, they will not try to stop you and will hand over the money and let the police deal with it because it is insured and not worth the risk to other customers.
